The domain name is the address of your website, something like Google.com, which is the address of the top search engine on the internet. The word "Google" is just a brand name and it is not related to the service provided by that website. However, because of it's strong brand recognition, Google does not suffer because its name is not related to the services it provides. For webmasters like us, we have to choose a domain name that is related to the service provided by our new websites, because our websites will not be famous brand names such as Google.com.
You should choose a domain name that includes the main keywords of your niche. WHY? You need traffic to your new website and the best and most highly targeted traffic comes from search engines. The first strategy of optimizing your website to receive this targeted and high quality traffic is to optimize your domain name by including your main keywords in it.
In the following steps, I recommend choosing a good, niche related, SEO optimized domain name and discuss how to purchase it safely online.
- Find a good keyword. Before you choose your domain name, you should find the niche of your new website. After identifying the niche, you can choose keywords related to that niche. Your keywords should be less competitive and have good ad value, if possible. To view many suggestions for your niche, go to the Google keyword suggestion tool, write the main keyword of your niche, and search for suggestions.
You should choose the keyword that have a high ad value and are less competitive than other, related keywords. Say your niche is "Golf", write the word "Golf" in the Google keyword suggestion tool and it will generate many suggestions. Now, you can choose something like "Cheap Golf Sets". This would be a very good keyphrase for your new website as it is has a high ad value and is less competitive than related keywords, which means that it should rank well in the major search engines. This keyword will also perform well with Google Adsense and Golf Affiliate Programs for more revenue. The golf niche pays very well as an advertising market.
- Choose the domain name. Now we have chosen the keyword for our niche, "Cheap Golf Sets". You can search for available unsold domain names that includes the keyword "Cheap Golf Sets". You can search for available domain names at GoDaddy.com, it is the best domain name registrar on the internet. Domain name costs start from $1.99 per year. Search for CheapGolfSets.com, if it is available, you can easily purchase it and get traffic instantly.
You may ask this question, "is this right, can my new domain name get traffic easily after the purchasing process and after building a simple website?", the answer is simply "YES". If you select the right keywords, it is very very easy to get your website on the first page of search engines for your niche search term (i.e. if someone searches "Cheap Golf Sets", new your domain "CheapGolfSets.com" will be listed). Domains with dashes like "Cheap-Golf-Sets.com", can also be good to use.
What should you do if the CheapGolfSets.com domain is not available? You can register the same domain with another extension like .net, .org, .us, etc. If CheapGolfSets.com is an old, well-known website, I suggest you to find other keyword for your new domain name. Don't register the other extension domain because it will be more difficult to get your new domain above the old one in the search engine results.
- Purchase the domain name online. Go to GoDaddy.com. As I mentioned above, it is one of the best domain registration providers on the internet. You can purchase the .com domains at $6.99/year. It is also gives you many professional tools to control your domain easily. These tools typically cost about $96 and you will get them for free.
- Transfer the DNS to your web hosting provider. If you don't buy a web hosting service from GoDaddy, you must transfer the DNS of your new domain name from GoDaddy to your web hosting provider. Every web hosting provider must has a unique DNS address that you must point your domain to. It takes up to 48 hours for the DNS transferring process to be completed. Be patient and that's it.
