The warning beep on your Mac may start to annoy you so that you wish you could change it to something that is less annoying. The Mac offers you options in the sound settings and can be configured with a few steps.

  1. Go to Monitors and Sound. From the Apple Menu on your desktop, select the Monitors and Sound option, then find the Alerts icon and select it. You will be presented with six sounds to use as alerts. Click each one to hear a preview of the sound, then decide which one you want to use. The alert sound choices are Sosumi, Wild Eep, Simple Beep, Indigo, Droplet and Quack. When you have made your choice you can exit to your desktop.
  2. Change the sound scheme. If you don't like any of the sounds available as a warning beep for your Mac, you can create or change the sound scheme. You can record your own voice and create a warning scheme. Plan what you will say and how it will sound, then go to the Apple Menu and select the Monitors and Sound option. Select the Sound icon, then under the Sound Monitoring Source choose the External Mic or the Built-In Mic. If you choose the External Mic as your sound source then find a microphone with a 1/8 inch plug and plug it in to the microphone input on your Mac. Go to the Alerts icon and click it, then select Add to bring up a recording interface. Check the recording levels to see if it is too high or low. You will want to avoid having the sound meter peaking, or you will get a distorted sound. When you are ready, select the Record button to start recording. Record your voice as clearly as possible, then save the sound you recorded. Play back the recorded sound by clicking the play button, then check to see if you are satisfied with the sound quality. Now the sound you recorded and saved will show up on the list of warning sounds. You can now select this to change the warning beep on your Mac.
  3. Avoid the beeping noise on volume control. Your Mac makes a beeping noise when you alter the volume using the keyboard. It can be a annoying to you or other people around you, especially if you are in a quiet environment. You can avoid the beeping noise with a simple procedure on your keyboard. Before pressing the volume up or volume down key, hold down the Shift key then alter the volume to increase or decrease the level with the volume key.

Changing the warning beep on your Mac to one that will not be as annoying is easily done by selecting the other available warning sounds.
