HyperTerminal, or sometimes referred to as HyperTerm, uses Telnet to access Bulletin Board Service (BBS) and allows file transfer between two computers, with the use of a dial-up connection from another computer to access the remote computer. Steps outlined below would apply to Windows 2000 and Windows XP.
1. Install the HyperTerminal on your computer.
-
Click Start, highlight Settings, click on Control Panel, and when the Control Panel window pops up, select Add or Remove Programs.
-
Choose Properties from the Add or Remove Programs window, and proceed to clicking on the Windows Set Up Tab.
-
Select Communications by double clicking on it. Put a check mark on the box for HyperTerminal. Click OK and then confirm installation.
2. Run HyperTerminal on your computer.
-
Load HyperTerminal by clicking on Start and selecting Run.
-
Type HYPERTRM on the Run dialogue box and click OK.
-
Select Cancel on the Connection Description dialogue box that will appear, to proceed.
3. Choose your COMPort.
-
Choose File, from the Menu Bar, navigate to Properties, and the dialogue box for New Connection Properties will appear.
-
Choose Direct to ComX from the fifth drop down under Connect Using. For ComX, X signifies the COMPort you will be using to connect the modem, such as COM3, COM4, etc.
-
Hit OK, or press Enter on your keyboard.
4. Confirm the communication between the COMPort and the modem.
-
Type AT and press Enter on the blank terminal window that will pop up. You will get an OK reply from the modem if the communication is successfully connected. If you do not see AT or OK appearing on the terminal window, then make sure that the COMPort selected is correct. After verifying that it is correct, perform the same step again.
-
Check the following if problem would persist:
- Double check if the modem is properly installed.
- Check if COMPort is properly enabled and no clashes, which will be specified by a yellow exclamation mark.
- Make sure that the COMPort is enable in the system BIOS setup.
5. Dial a remote ISP or modem with phone number.
-
Key in ate1 and hit Enter. OK should appear as a response.
-
Type in atdt 123456 and press Enter, where 123456 is the actual phone number of the ISP or remote modem. If you get a dialing tone and once it proceeds to dial, then the installation is successful.
-
Check the following if you encounter dialing problems:
- Check for the line's dial tone.
- Make sure that the ISP number is correct, and double check if you need to attach a prefix, usually its ‘9' before dialing.
- Make sure that the area codes and/or international prefixes are correct.
- Using a telephone, dial a number, and you should hear a modem's high-pitched sound on the other end.
6. Disconnect from the remote modem once your done.
- Type +++ ath and press enter on the terminal window.
You do not use the Internet when you use the HyperTerminal, so same charges apply to your phone bill like as if you were talking on the phone. Procedure may vary especially if you are using an older version of Windows OS.
