Avatars are growing in popularity. One of the reasons why the avatar is the chosen profile picture is because it allows people to show off their faces while remaining relatively anonymous. Although most websites that offer avatars for the profile pictures will give you some degree of customization, most of the avatars will not be able to get the essential points of your face, and will make you look cartoonish and unrealistic. Here’s how you can create a realistic avatar face.
- FaceGen. One of the simplest programs that you can use is FaceGen, which has a free version that will allow you to model your own face. One of the benefits of using FaceGen’s modeling program is that it comes free and you may use it for as long as you like. Simply go to FaceGen’s website and then download the file. Unzip the downloaded file and double click on the item to open the installer. Once installed, you will be given a blank face where you can add and customize your features and your expression. You can change your bone structure, your lips, nose, eyes, skin color, hair style, hair color, eye color, et cetera. Afterwards, simply save the picture and upload it as your avatar.
- Photoshop. Another popular program that you can use is Photoshop. One of the biggest disadvantages with Photoshop is that it is very expensive. But if you already have Photoshop installed in your computer, you might as well use it to create your own avatar. One of the advantages of using Photoshop, on the other hand, is that it is a very powerful application with hundreds of features that will allow you to fully customize your avatar. You can draw and paint your avatar from scratch, if you know how to use Photoshop well. Otherwise, you can simply upload a picture; remove the background, and use layers and filters to give your picture a cartoonish and avatar-like feel.
- Gimp. Finally, you can also use Gimp, which is free image editing software that can be downloaded from websites such as CNET and Gimp. Gimp is similar to Photoshop, although there are some features that only Photoshop has. For basic modeling and graphics work, however, Gimp is more than enough. It will also allow you to create your own avatar using an old picture that you like. Again, it has layers and effects that you can use to easily change the look and feel of your photograph, and make your image look like an avatar.
- Saving. While you are working on your avatar, make sure that you always save your images because most graphic editing software is prone to crashes. The last thing you want is to find out that an hour’s worth of photo editing is ruined by an application crash. Also try making several versions of your work, so that you can use a different avatar for different websites.
With these steps, you should be able to create your own highly customized and personalized avatar, while retaining the classic cartoonish look and anonymity of most other avatars.
