A YouTube.com channel is a particular page wherein you can access a particular set of videos that fall under a particular category, genre or interest. This is an excellent way to establish your niche if you're an amateur video maker on YouTube. If you make a lot of news spoof skits and comedy shorts, you should allocate a separate channel for those videos from your webcam commentaries. Having channels in place makes the whole set of videos under your library more organized and accessible to those who may watch the videos later on.

An account made under YouTube is called a "channel." This makes all your videos fall under one "station" so it would be fairly easy to follow the stream of videos if you happen to get fans through your videos. There is an option for other registered users to subscribe to channels to get updates and alerts once you've created and published a new video. This also allows your subscribers to receive message updates from you as well as browse through your entire history of videos and podcasts.

Here's how you start your own channel on YouTube:

  1. Go to youtube.com.
  2. Click the link that says "Create Account." This will redirect you to a page wherein you can in put your desired information details. If you are currently logged in on the Google Network (Gmail, Google documents etc.), you will have to sign up first since the YouTube network is also under the Google marketing juggernaut.
  3. Once signed out, you will be asked for a username, your home country and birthday. The country is important because certain videos are not allowed to be played on certain Web sites. You will also be asked if you want your channel "searchable" through your e-mail address. Try to strategize when thinking of the username. It has to be snappy, humorous and memorable. You will be competing against literally thousands of other video makers so you will have to pull out all the stops not only with the videos but also with the packaging and pushing the product.
  4. Read the Terms and Conditions of YouTube and click the appropriate box. Click OK and you'll have your channel in no time.
  5. Promote your channel by posting it on your social networking site pages like Facebook and Myspace. The shopping of these sites can be quite cumbersome, but it makes perfect sense if you're trying to get a strong following on YouTube.

YouTube can be a great way to promote yourself and show off your movie making skills to the rest of the world. Some people have even launched movie and music careers thanks to a small webcam and a basic microphone. With the Internet at your disposal anything is possible and it all starts with you making your own YouTube channel.
