How To Create Links in a PDF Document

A specially coded command that enables any user to access different locations of a Web page or document is called a link. Creating links in a Portable Document Format (PDF) file is easy. Just follow the detailed steps outlined in this article.

  1. Download and install the full version of Adobe Acrobat software application on your PC. Most computer users only have the Adobe Reader on their computers. This software is the free version that only enables the computer to interpret and read any file saved in the Portable Document Format (PDF). This free version however is not fully equipped to manipulate and make various functions such as putting links in the PDF documents. You will need the full version of the Adobe Acrobat software application if you want to create links in a PDF document. Purchase and download the full version from Adobe's official Web site. When you do so, the installation program should automatically run and all you will need to do is to follow the detailed instructions for correct installation.
  2. Choose the word or set of words that you wish to make into a link. Now, you will need to open the document in the Adobe Acrobat program. Once this is done, identify which word or set of words will become links in your PDF file.
  3. Start converting the word or set of words into a link. Go to the Tools tab and click on it once for a dropdown menu to be revealed. Locate the option Advanced Editing and another cascading menu list pops up. This time, highlight Link and click on it once. Another option would be to look for the icon displayed on the toolbar. This Link icon should look like a chain. Once you click on it, the mouse pointer will be made into a link tool. This is then what you will use to enclose the identified word or set of words that are to be made into a link. Once you have enclosed the text, the Create Link pop up window then appears. Now in this window, you will be prompted to key in information about the settings of the link. Meaning, you will need to set if the link will be contained within the PDF document or within a Web page. Also, you can configure other settings such as choosing a color for the link. Once these are set, simply select the option Set Link to finally make the word or set of words into a link.

Links are useful as they promote interactivity by encouraging computer users to browse some more on your Web site or PDF document.
