Creating a hard disk partition in your personal computer's hard drive is always an advisable practice. Firstly, a hard disk partition ensures that all of your important files are protected from typical hardware problems, such as when your machine is attacked by a computer virus. Secondly, a hard disk partition also helps the user organize his files into easily accessible storage locations, thus tracking down specific data faster. However, having too many hard disk partitions in your computer hard drive can be confusing, and the need to delete a partition may be necessary. This is especially true if a certain hard disk partition does not contain any more essential files. In this tutorial, we will teach you how to delete a partition in a Windows XP-based operating system.

1. Launch the Computer Management program of Windows XP.
Click on the green Start button for the pullup menu to appear. Afterwards, direct your mouse pointer to the command Run once. Once the Run window pops up, key the command prompt compmgmt.msc into the supplied text field. This will result in the Computer Management window to appear.

2. Start the disk scanning process.
Now, on the Computer Management window, locate Disk Management on the left-hand portion and click on it once. This will commence the disk scanning process. Once the program is done, the number of physical disks will be shown on the right-hand section of the Computer Management window, as well as the number of hard disk partitions. Notice that there is a color coding system used to identify which is the main hard disk and which are the hard disk partitions. The main hard disk is color coded navy blue, while the extended partitions are green. Meanwhile, the logical drives of each extended partition are color coded royal blue.

3. Select the hard disk partition you wish to have deleted.
Now, locate the hard disk partition you wish to have deleted. Once you are certain of which it is, right click on it for a dropdown menu to appear. Locate the command Delete Logical Drive or Delete Partition and click on it once. A pop up window will prompt you to confirm the command, and just click on OK for the process to begin.

Bear in mind that you will need to access the administrative system of the computer to be able to delete any hard disk partition. Make sure that you know the system administrative password beforehand so that you do not encounter any problems. Also, ensure that you have identified all of the important data and transferred these to other disk locations before you start the delete partition process, or else you will lose them permanently.
