How To Design Your Personal Homepage

Considered the most important page on websites, the homepage sets the first impression of the service, information or product that you offer on your websites. At the onset of the Internet, only a few people could set up their homepages, specifically for commercial and income generating purposes.

But as the numbers of web users soared to a skyrocketing degree, almost anyone can now set up their home pages not only for commercial reasons but for personal purposes as well. More and more personal web sites and home pages have been set up, all with various styles and designs. That may seem something not so ordinary, but with free access to the web, users have a wide array of choices when it comes to homepage designs. Free homepage and my homepage templates are also available, although for those who want to have something really personal, various tools and add-ons can likewise be used.

Now, how are homepages designed? There are several factors to consider not only in designing a personal homepage, but in setting it up as well. Here they are.

  1. First thing to consider is the purpose of your personal homepage. Are you offering certain products or services? Or do you simply want to create your own online presence? Your visitors, especially if it is their first time to visit your page, must know what your site is all about. Your visitor might get confused trying to figure out what your site is all about. No user likes to waste time on one page considering that there are many more good and easy to use sites. You want your visitors to come back, right? Usually, the line that expresses what your site is all about is placed at the top of the page. This is because readers usually start navigating the page from the top. It usually comes as a tagline that sums up what the page is all about.

  2. Next thing that you should consider is the content. This is an important aspect of designing your personal page. The content doesn't have to be in words. It would also depend on your purpose or the type of page you have. For instance, if you're a photographer and you want to show your designs and shots, then the content of your page would focus on the pictures. That is, you will need a gallery or other tools to manage your photos. This can also be done if you want to show off Ebay products, supposing that it's your personal interest. After determining the content of your personal page, you can then choose the layout that will match your page.

  3. For the lay-out, it's not a good idea to simply use any lines or images just for their own sake. It must be organized and positioned to where they should be for your homepage to have a good, user-friendly design. Moreover, do not overload your page with add-ons, as it can slow down the loading time, especially if graphics are used. In the same way, the sizes must be correct. The same is true with the colors that you will be combining. It can range from simple to flashy combinations, depending on the effect that you want to have for your personal homepage.

  4. And finally, see to it that your page is constantly updated. The "freshness" and the "newness" must be there for your visitors to have something to check on and eventually visit your page from time to time.
