How To Disable Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications

Windows Genuine Advantage was created by Microsoft to prevent software piracy. This tool connects to the Microsoft servers each time your computer starts up. If your system did not pass the validation test, a notification states that your copy of Windows is not genuine. When this happens, Microsoft will not allow you to upgrade to Internet Explorer 7, Windows Media Player 11 and download critical updates.

Method 1: Deleting WGALogon.dll and WGATray.exe

  1. Click the Start Button
  2. Select Run
  3. Key in System32 and click on the OK button; this command takes you to the document path C:\WINDOWS\system32, and usually states that the files are hidden, because this folder keeps the system working properly and should not be modified. Make sure to click on Show the contents of this folder to make files viewable
  4. Once the folder is viewable, follow these click paths: Tools, Folder Options, View, and tick to unselect Hide extensions for known file types
  5. Rename WGALogon.dll to WGALogon1.dll
  6. Delete WGATray.exe, open Task Manager, and end its process in the Process tab
  7. Go back to C:\WINDOWS\system32 and delete the application extension of WGALogon.dll, and rename WGALogon1.dll back to WGALogon.dll
  8. Power cycle your computer as this process will not be complete until computer is restarted

Method 2: Disable execution rights for WGALogon.dll

  1. Turn off Simple File Sharing by following the click paths: Tools, Folder Options, View tab
  2. Right click WgaLogon.dll in C:\WINDOWS\system32 to open the Security Tab
  3. Select Advanced button
  4. Un-tick Inherit box
  5. Select Copy and the press OK
  6. Remove Read&Execute permission for WgaLogon.dll
  7. Click OK to apply changes
  8. Restart the computer

Method 3: Download RemoveWGA to remove the WGA Notification tool. Please note that this only disables the WGA Notification tool and does not validate your copy of Windows. Keep in mind that most antivirus and anti-spyware programs often mistake RemoveWGA as a virus, but rest assured that this is not a threat to your system. The reason why antivirus programs flag this as a malware is that it changes the registry to remove WGA Notification.

Method 4: Do a System Restore

If you just want to remove the Windows Genuine Advantage Notification, you can use System Restore to revert your Windows system back to the time before you installed the program. Here are the steps on how to do a system restore:

  1. Click the Start Button
  2. Select Program
  3. Select Accessories
  4. Go to System Tools and choose System Restore
  5. Choose a restore point before the installation of Windows Genuine Advantage Notification and follow the steps shown on the System Restore wizard

Bear in mind that the workarounds mentioned above do not authenticate the installed copy on your computer, rather, they will only eliminate WGA Notifications.
