Partition software, commonly referred to as a partition editor, partition tool, partition program or partition utility, is a program that a user can use to create, delete and adjust partitioned volumes of a hard disk.
The purpose of partitioning a hard drive varies from one person to another. Some use partitioning to segregate data files, while some use it for their system’s virtual memory paging and increase and to improve their computer’s performance and efficiency. In some case, partitioning is used for multi-booting setups wherein a computer can have several operating systems on a single computer.
You can create as many partition volumes as you want in one hard drive, with you deciding how big the storage capacity will be for each volume. Partitioning your hard drive is very helpful in segregating data, although it will prove to be a bit taxing for some to monitor the partition management of your drives.
The Windows Operating System platform offers disk partitioning using Disk Management. This can be done by accessing Control Panel, hitting on Administrative Tools and opening Computer Management. When the Computer Management window pops up, on the left windowpane, expand Storage by hitting the plus sign beside it. On the right windowpane, you will see the partitioned volume, and there you can proceed with what you want to do with your partitioned volumes. Be very careful when you use XP’s Disk Manager.
When choosing software to download to partition your hard drive, be very cautious. Here is how to download free partition software you can use:
1. Search the web for the most recommended program used to partition hard drives. The ratings and comments made by previous users of said partition manager will give you an idea of how user-friendly and easy the program is.
2. Remember to check 'wiki's' for a listing of available partitioning software. This website lists prominent and well-known open source freeware or programs that are offered at no cost.
3. If you find software from the above-mentioned ways, consider if the software supports your operating system.
4. If your computer meets the free software’s requirements, download it from a very reliable download site. I suggest cnet.com and bestdownload.com because both websites have comprehensive collections of programs, with editor and user ratings where you can measure the efficiency of the tool you are about to download.
5. After reviewing all aspects of the software, you are now ready to download the program. Once your download is finished, install the software and follow the onscreen instructions for it to continue and complete the installation. Read the software’s manual for the steps and instructions for you to accomplish your partitioning task, be it removing, merging, copying, deleting or creating a partitioned volume.
Before performing a partitioning task, always remember to create a backup of your important data to avoid pointless data loss.
