Did you know?  Hundreds of Bibles were hand-written by monks during the medieval times. Just imagine page after page of flowing print so fine that it took the monks months and even years of hand-wrenching work. Fortunately, gone are the days when monks have to suffer. Now, they’re enjoying printing machines and, of course digital printing.

Digital printing does not only mean printing from a printer that is connected to a computer. It refers to the system that does not need film or plates, which was required of the printing press of earlier times. Digital printing, in fact still involves heavy machinery (but not as many) as the former printing process.

Here are some pointers that make digital printing a potentially profitable investment in the market:

  1. Simple and fast solutions. Back in the day, printing involved three steps: pre-press, films or plates, then finally the printing. Digital printing made everything simpler. It only requires an image of the document. As soon as this is uploaded into the computer, this document may be printed with ease.  Other unnecessary details may be deleted or erased. There are even companies online who promote services on digital printing, so the production is fast indeed.
  2. Easy edit. With the help of application software of photo services like Adobe Photoshop and CorelDRAW X3, digital photos may be readjusted by color, design or the picture itself; decorated with borders; personalized with names, cartoons, expressions or quotations. Style in shots, pictures, etc. may also come in a variety of ways that features black and white backgrounds, or in sepia. The digital-ness of the printing may also mean that the product can be viewed even before being printed, making printing highly versatile and more error proof.
  3. More accurate. Digital printing has also made print posters more accurate. With systems of superior printing machinery and printing paper, one could print out properly aligned margins and more detailed color spectrums. Some digital printers are so advanced that one of these features is a spectrophotometer that automatically detects and adjusts to the color specified, which eliminates the need for someone to adjust the color or the need to reprint again because of color mismatch.
  4. No more bleeding inks. The inks do not seep through the printing paper, instead it covers the paper’s surface, making it ideal for magazine printing.
  5. “Print on Demand”.  One source names digital printing as print on demand because printing may be limited up to the number of copies ordered by the customer. Printing on demand is an effective cost-buster since it reduces the amount of printing that is not needed or sold. This reduces space problems as well as the need to recheck catalogs. This feature makes it very irresistible to freelance artists, authors and small print-for-hire services. Benefits are limited to only small productions since digital printing is currently not made to handle large scale productions. Digital printers, for example, limit themselves to some standard-sized paper.

Digital printing may have a long to go before it could catch up with large-scale old-fashioned printing, but it has found an agreeable market among private consumers. In the meantime, it may be time to put away the old to make space for the new.
