How To Find an Online Storage Service

If you need computer storage space for your own personal needs or for your business, many new online services offer a solution to your computer storage problems. Do you have more than one computer? Online storage services allow you to share files between computers without the hassle of using thumb drives.

It seemed that almost overnight, dozens of different companies began doing business online, offering online storage services. Just a few years ago, the only option for storage was diskettes. Before that, computers used floppy disks. Newer computers no longer have a diskette drive installed.

What reasons might cause you to consider using an online storage service? If you have files that you would like to share with more than one person, an online storage service may be perfect. If you've lost your hard drive to damage, online backup services make re-creating your computer files much easier. With so many companies offering their services, how do you choose the right one? The answer depends on your needs. Here are a few of the many online services available.

Step 1

Mozy advertises on television that it has up to 2 gigabytes of storage for backup free. Other companies are likely to follow the same step into television advertising soon. Visit their site and download their free software. Automatic backups will be performed routinely. I use this service myself and it really is a breeze to setup and use.

Step 2

Carbonite offers a very unique online service; it continuously backs up new data on your PC. Your data is then encrypted and stored at their remote backup center. There's no limit on backup storage either.  The price is also right—free for 15 days, then less than $5 per month. This service may well be one of the best available.

Step 3

Box has a Web-based access panel that allows sharing and protection of your documents, photos and files from anywhere, even your mobile phone.

These are just a few of the many online storage options available. Look at them all and choose the one that suits your online storage needs the best.

Jason Kay recommends viewing a list of free online storage sites in order to determine which one is appropriate for your storage needs.
