RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It is the temporary memory used by your computer to store data that you access when you are using your computer. Your computer’s hard disk drive is that one that stores the files that you have worked on and saved. This is also where all the programs that your have installed in your computer resides. These files and programs that you will use are temporarily loaded to your computer’s RAM so that it will be easier to access and use them. These files are lost from the RAM when you turn off your computer.
Increasing the RAM will improve the processing speed of your computer and you can open several applications at once without affecting the speed of your computer that much. Your computer may be working at half its capacity or its full capacity, depending on how many RAM modules are installed on your motherboard. To know what the maximum RAM capacity of your computer is, follow the tips below.
- Consult your computer manual. In the memory section, you can check how much RAM your computer is currently using and how much more you can add to it by installing a compatible and recommended RAM module. You can also check how much RAM your computer has by locating the My Computer icon and right-clicking on it and look for the Properties tab. When you click the Properties tab, by default it will open the System Properties dialog box. Under the General tab you will see the three sections namely System, Registered To and Computer which indicates the name of the processor installed in your computer and the amount of RAM it has, for example, 1.80GHz, 1.75GB of RAM.
- You can go to the Crucial Technology website and use their Crucial Memory Advisor ™ tool to know how much RAM your computer can handle. There are two ways to know what is inside your computer and get the proper advice if you are thinking of upgrading your computer system by downloading their scanner tool. The other way is to use the memory advisor tool from their website by providing the name of the manufacturer of your motherboard in Step One. In Step Two you need to select the correct product line from the manufacturer that you have given, such as motherboards. In Step Three you have to provide the motherboard model from the drop down menu before clicking the Find It button. This will bring up a page where you can see the recommended memory upgrade for your motherboard and system information and the manufacturer’s specifications for the RAM modules. You can also scroll down and check all the question and answer topics provided for your particular brand and model of motherboard and take note of the recommended amount of RAM modules you can install.
- If you have a branded computer and you have lost the manual, you can go to the computer manufacturer’s website and locate your computer model. You will be able to download a copy of your computer manual so that you can check your computer’s maximum RAM capacity.
- You can also take a physical look inside your CPU by opening it and looking at the memory cards installed. If there is only one memory card in it and there is still another slot available, which means you can still install another memory card to increase your processing speed.
When you want to upgrade and increase the speed of your computer, make sure that the memory card you are going to buy is compatible with your motherboard specifications. Not following these specifications may result in your computer crashing and rendering the new memory card useless.
