How To Get Rid of Outlook Spam

Self Promotional Advertising Messages (SPAM) are unwanted junk mail that gets into your email box. A majority of the email that is received by most individual are considered junk. Dealing with these junk emails takes extra time and affects your productivity. Blocking the spam before it gets into your email box is the best way to deal with SPAM. Installing spam filters in your Internet gateway or on your email server is the first line of defense to get rid of the unwanted junk emails. However, even with filters installed, installing Outlook spam-blocking filters is still necessary to ensure that your inbox is not cluttered. Follow the procedure below to activate the Outlook Spam filter in your computer.

1.    Double click the Outlook icon in your desktop. If it is not present in your desktop, click the Start button, then All Program, then select Microsoft, click Outlook.

2.    Once Outlook dialog box is open, click Tools then Options.

3.    Another dialog box will appear, click the Junk E-mail button.

4.    Once the Junk E-mail Options dialog box appear, choose how the junk filter will control the incoming mails to your inbox. There are five options to choose from: No Automatic Filtering, Low, High, safe Lists Only, and Permanently Delete. Each option has a description on how it works, so you will be guided with what option to choose. Then click OK.

5.    To protect messages sent by your colleagues and friends from getting filtered to the Junk E-mail folder, add your trusted contacts on the “Safe Senders List”. You can do this with the following steps:

  • Click “Safe Senders” tab.
  • Click “Add” button.
  • Enter your friend or colleague’s e-mail address.
  • Click “OK”.
  • Place a checkmark to the “Also trust e-mail from my Contacts” so as not have spammer in the list of your contacts.

6.    To protect any messages from newsgroup that you had participated, add your newsgroup email or domain on the “Safe Recipients”. Do this by following the simple steps below:

  • Click “Safe Recipients” tab.
  • Click “Add” button.
  • Enter your newsgroup domain or email address.
  • Click “OK”.

7.    If you already identified spammers, you could already blacklist them through “Blocked Senders List”. Domains and email addresses added to this list will always be treated as junk email. Follow the steps below:

  • Click “Blocked Senders Lists” tab.
  • Click “Add” button.
  • Enter the email address or domain that you want to be blacklisted. Be careful though when you add domains—if you add for example, all emails from that you will receive will be treated as spam.
  • Click “OK”

There are plenty of third party utilities and software products that have been created to filter spam. Getting rid of junk emails can easily be done without the need for download, buying, or installing any other filters, because of the anti-SPAM features and filters embedded in Microsoft Outlook. With these simple steps, activating these features and ensuring that your email inbox is clean can be done.
