Before you buy notebook memory, a memory chip, or any desktop memory for upgrades, make sure you are aware of the guidelines in purchasing memory upgrades for your computer. Installing additional computer memory on your laptop is relatively simple, and may only require 10-15 minutes to install. Use the step-by-step instructions below to install new memory on your laptop computer system with an access panel. If your laptop has no access panel, hire an authorized technician to install your memory.
1. Prepare the tools and materials needed
- Non-magnetic flat-head or precision Philips screwdriver
- The computer manual for your laptop model
2. Ground yourself. Wear anti-shock wrist straps or to avoid computer shock and static electricity from damaging your module and computer parts, ground yourself by doing the following:
- Turn off the laptop, monitor, printer, and speakers attached.
- Plug in the power cord and touch a metal part of your laptop case that is unpainted.
- Stay in place and plant your feet.
3. Locate and open the access panel.
Check your manual to locate where your SODIMM slots are and how to open it. SODIMM slots are usually behind a back access panel. Remove the screws of the access panel.
4. Look for the memory slots.
Remove the panel from the laptop and check if the SODIMMs slots are filled with modules. Most SODIMMs are individually installed, but some SODIMMs are installed in banks or matched pairs.
5. Remove and replace the memory module.
If there is an open SODIMM slot, install the new module. If the slots are full, remove one of the old modules. Replace or upgrade an existing module by pressing down on the module clamps or clips on both sides of the module. Remove the old module from the slot, gently lifting its edge at a 45-degree angle and then pull the module out of the slot.
6. Install your new memory module/s.
Hold the new module by the edges when taking it out of the anti-static bag. Fill in the next lowest numbered slot open. Line up the keys in the SODIMM slot of your motherboard with the notches in the metal pins of the new module. Gently insert the new module into the slot at a 45-degree angle. When all the pins are secure in the slot, put the module flat down until its clamps lock into place.
7. Check if memory was added.
Turn on the power of your laptop. You should see on your startup screen display, the added memory or if you have a Windows OS, check the memory in the properties, at "My Computer". If everything functions properly, screw back on the access panel of your laptop. The memory installation is completed!
8. Troubleshoot if needed.
Go into your computer’s BIOS to let the system detect the new RAM installed. If the computer has problems detecting your new RAM, check if:
- the power cords are plugged in properly
- the two side clips of the new module snap and hold the module firmly into place. If not, repeat the process to replace the module in the slot.
- the wires and cables inside your computer are properly in place.
For additional information on how to install computer notebook memory in your computer system, read the manuals that came with your computer, for specific procedures. If you still cannot make your computer function properly, consult an authorized technician.
Make sure to purchase the matching specs for a memory chip, desktop memory, or laptop memory, before installing new memory to avoid problems.
