A Certificate Security Protocol acts as a gateway to users who wish to gain access to information over a network. There are standards that need to be fulfilled before a user can gain access to the information.   1. Certificate Security Protocol Functions - There are a set of protocols or standards that are to be observed when servers want to access information from each other. On the Internet a certificate is an identifying document that is used digitally to enable verification between a server and a client. Generally there are certificates for both servers and clients. The client certificate includes data about the user and information about the organization which signed the client certificate. The server certificate on the other hand includes information about the company and information about the issuing organization.

    Certificates provide security for clients and servers. The decision to trust or not to trust a client or server falls on conditions set by protocols. A set of standards are to be followed when creating certificates and the standards will determine trust between two parties. If the digital protocols are in place then the site will be trusted and allowed to be displayed.

  2. Authentication Server - An authentication server controls who is allowed to have access to the information being requested. Authentication will allow access in these three ways; first through Privacy, where only authorized users can gain access, second through Authorization where certain types of data is determined to be displayed, and third Non-Repudiation is where both sender and receiver cannot deny having sent or received data because the server will record the activity.

    Authentication is performed by hardware and software which controls the access over a network. Algorithms are also used in an authentication process and a simple example of this is when you try to gain access using a user name and a password. The authentication server will save the user name and password of each user who registers with the server. Once the registration is approved the user can now log in using the user name and password.

  3. Browser Security - Internet browser software comes with pre-installed certificates that identify which sites to trust. Users will be informed by the browser if the site does not comply with the standard protocols or if the website’s certificate is no longer valid.

Certificate security protocols provide security over a network to ensure that the user’s connection is secure from prying eyes and malicious attacks.
