Becoming a civil servant is a noble undertaking because you are serving the country and its citizens. Civil servants are the unsung heroes in government. Whether you work for the local, state or federal government agency, you are classified as a civil servant.
Because each of the different governmental institutions work independently, they have their own employment system and hiring practices. Towns, cities and municipalities have their own human resource hiring system, state governments take care of their own personnel requirements, and federal governments engage in their own employment system.
For federal government job search:
- Go to the website of USAJOBS. This is the official website of the United States Office of Personnel Management which handles all federal government jobs.
- Input the type of job you are looking for and the location in the site’s government job search tab. For example, you can input ‘engineer’ as the type of job then ‘Colorado’ as the state. You will then be given a list of engineering jobs each with a job summary, location in Colorado, and the corresponding salary.
USA JOBS is a comprehensive website of not only current job postings but it also has a slew of useful information for any federal job seeker. There are downloadable forms, a section on employer services, veterans employment resources center, a complete info center and a page where you can apply for membership to USA JOBS.
For state government jobs:
- Go to the website of your state via the USA.GOV website or by searching for it using your browser’s search facility.
- Find the link to your state government’s employment opportunities. Here you should see all the pertinent information regarding hiring procedures and job availabilities.
For local government jobs:
- Locate your city, county, townships or municipality’s official website using your browser’s search engine of through your state government’s site.
- Click on the employment opportunities tab. This should bring you to the page containing information of jobs available or instructions on how to apply for jobs in the local government.
You can also locate for available federal, state or local jobs in some of the job websites below.
- Work for America offers information on current federal jobs, hiring procedures, benefits, a list of top large and small government agencies, a student center resource page and a diversity center page.
- GovJobs has resources both for the job seekers and the employers. You can post your resume here.
- GovtJob.Net is centered on local and state government jobs. It has links to other regional and local job banks. State government official websites are also part of their links. You can click on any of the state websites to find listings for state jobs.
- Careers in Government is a site featuring jobs in the public sector both in the US and abroad.
- GovernmentJobs provides an easy to use job search facility wherein you can select the job location per state, the job category and specify the minimum salary you are looking for.
Another way to locate government jobs is to visit the different governmental agencies that you are interested to work for like: US ARMY, FBI, Department of Education, Environmental Protection Agency and others.
A civil service career can be a rewarding opportunity for anyone called to serve. It is easy to find government jobs in the local, state or federal level using the Internet. There are many resource sites and official agency websites that provide information regarding employment prospects.
