Making a layout for your website or a social networking profile for sites such as MySpace is actually quite easy. You do not need to have any specialized knowledge of coding or HTML, since there are plenty of sites where you can get all the help you need, including readymade templates and step-by-step instructions. To learn how to use this information and make your own layouts, read on...
Simplicity is the key. Start with a simple layout until you're proficient and only then experiment. The layout background, colors used, images and graphics which make up the layout outline should be simple, yet attractive. Choose colors and designs which complement each other and give an overall pleasing look to the layout.
Ease of navigation. The layout should make navigating between sections and different pages easy for visitors who log on to your site. The information provided should be able to flow in an easy and structured manner such that the information on your website makes sense and follows in order.
Using space and providing help. Pages in your layout should not be too cluttered. If the amount of information or data relating to a particular topic is huge, split it into segments which the user can navigate one by one, rather than stuffing all of it on to the same page. Provide a site map and always include a ‘help' section. If there are no indicators of how to navigate the site or what to do if some action on part of the user is required, they will move on to a more helpful site and not recommend your site to others. You could lose traffic and the purpose of having your own website is lost!
Choosing layout generators or readymade template. Browse through the Web to find and select your preferred type of layout from the thousands of generators or templates available. Most of such services allow free downloads, but the number of ideas and templates could be limited. Since these are provided for free, everyone will make use of the same services and you may end up with a layout which is identical to several others. If you're looking to make your layout unique and outstanding, you can sign up with a paid service. You will be paying for the service, but the choice and variety available to you will be vast.
Layout structure. Once you've downloaded you chosen generator or template, you can get started with creating the layout. First, you will need to create the background look, choose from the color, image positioning and other options provided in the background section of the template. Next, move on to the options for creating various sections, pick your choice and confirm. The third section will let you create and modify various headings and titles, giving you a choice of color, fonts, text size, etc. Lastly, choose the settings for the main text as you did for the heading section and save your selection. Finally click on the ‘generate' or other such button which generates the layout for your preview. Take a look, make the necessary changes, and once you are satisfied, save your layout template and upload on to your website.
Uploading the completed layout. If the layout is for posting on a site such as MySpace, log into your account on the site, navigate to the "edit my profile" section and choose the provided option to upload your profile. Paste the layout code and click on ‘submit' to save changes. When you log in to the site again, your new layout will be up and running!
Once you've practiced with simple templates, you can gradually progress to more complex and difficult layout generation tricks. Play around with the formats, using your imagination and creativity and then invite your family and friends to have a look at your new website or profile.
