How To Report Spam to Yahoo!

The report spam button is probably the most clicked button in any web mail client’s window. With the multitude of spammers trying to invade your inbox every single day of the week, it’s not surprising that the amount of spam is enough to overpower the legitimate mail that one gets in any email account.

Spamming works in a fairly simple manner. It’s a game of hit and miss. Most spammers have crawlers all over the internet that look for e-mail addresses that the company could use. Spammers feed off of these addresses, so you must be very careful with where you leave your contact details. May it be a login sheet or an internet forum, once it’s out in the open, it’s going to be hard to keep spammers from sending you messages.

Don’t reply. Aside from making sure that you don’t feed the spammers with your e-mail by haphazardly giving it away online, it would also be great if you can simply ignore the spam. Replying to those nonsensical messages selling you male enhancement pills or any other prescription drug would only be good for one thing:  making the spammers aware that your e-mail address is live. Once they find out that your address is currently in use, that’s almost like a green light for the spammer to flood your address with even more advertisements.

Report spam button. Everybody tries to block spam or use spam killer, because not all spam can be harmless. While the majority can be a nuisance, some are actually a lot more sinister. Spam can be used to gain access to your personal details through phishing or other social engineering methods. This would then pave the way for the unauthorized use of your account, or worse, the use of your credit card for purchases and transactions that you didn’t approve.

Most webmail providers let you report spam messages so that these can be minimized. Yahoo! is no exception. Messages usually come with the “report spam” button so that malicious messages could easily be sent to the bulk folder that serves as a receptacle for the unwanted mail that often clutters inboxes every day. It’s not quite exactly foolproof, as a lot of spam still gets through this filter. In case you mistakenly mark a legitimate message as spam, you can easily remove the flag.

Anti-spam software. Most modern antivirus software would have anti-phishing tools, which can automatically scan each and every email message and alert you if these are possibly scams or phishing attempts. Other software, like are dedicated anti-spam applications that reside on your computer.

Sadly, spam is a fact of life. Once you sign up for an email address, chances are it will be the target of spam, unless you are very careful in guarding it. But don’t worry. Webmail providers’ anti-spam technologies are ever evolving, and these are improving in the way they detect and deal with these annoying emails. Remember, don’t reply. The best way to deal with these is to ignore them and report using the spam button.
