Accidental spills, dust, food crumbs and many other contaminants can make your keyboard dirty and greasy over time. Grime can minimize the keyboard’s functionality or worse, cause total deterioration of its condition.  Cleaning dirty keyboards can take much of your time, and in some instances you have no other recourse but to replace it. Replacing the keyboard is not so much of a problem with a desktop computer but with a laptop or notebook type, a broken keyboard can cause you a lot of trouble with its repair or replacement.

To protect your keyboard from dirt and damage, use a keyboard cover on your laptop. Be reminded however that you need to be careful in selecting a keyboard protector. Here are some tips for you to consider:

  1. Choose one that is durable and easy to clean. Don’t pick covers that are sensitive or can crack from detergents, bleaches and other cleaning substances.
  2. Most keyboard protectors come in colors of black or white. While white is elegant looking, it can get soiled and stained quickly, hence black is a better option. However if you really want to go for a white keyboard skin, look for one that is made of stain-proof material.
  3. Find one that has a good feel to the fingers. Some people don’t want to use keyboard protectors because they feel their typing accuracy and speed are getting hindered hence they prefer to type on a bare keyboard. But there are keyboard covers now available which feel like second skin, so to speak.
  4. Select a keyboard cover that is non-penetrable and which liquids don’t get through easily. Keyboard covers are mostly made of silicone, polyurethane and plastic. Of these three, silicone is the sturdiest material that liquids cannot just penetrate except for corrosives like acid or alcohol.
  5. Make sure you purchase a keyboard protector that is compatible with your keyboard.  By compatible it means the cover should exactly fit in the keyboard with no hanging or loose ends in any of the keys.  Since keyboards differ in layouts depending on the size and brand, make it a point that you choose one with the exact size, fit and mold.
  6. Don’t always go for bargains. There are inexpensive keyboard covers that can lure you into buying. If you are being sold a cover that costs as low as five dollars, think twice before you decide to buy the article. You may think it’s a good bargain, but in the end it will cost you more because you will need to purchase another one soon due to the poor quality of your first purchase.
  7. Go for a soft but firm keyboard cover. A lot of people stop using their keyboard covers after several uses because they are hard and uncomfortable. To ensure your satisfaction, read the labels and find out if the keyboard is pro-touch and light to the touch.

Keyboard covers not only protect the keyboard, they likewise prevent the spread of bacteria particularly when you share the use of your laptop with others. With keyboard protectors, you are safeguarded from getting contaminated with diseases since you can just wash them off and disinfect them with soap and water before and after each use.
