How To Stop Popups

If you're a frequent browser on the internet, you will have come across those irritating popups which abound on the Web. These are small windows, which appear with unwanted advertising or information clips when you visit websites and sometimes even when you are not! There are ways of avoiding these popups showing up on your computer screen frequently. If you are interested in blocking popups read the instructions listed below carefully.

Step 1

Blocking web ads. In case you are not already using a Google toolbar, download one and install it on your computer. This is one of the best toolbars with a facility to block unwanted popup ads. You can also use toolbars from Yahoo and MSN if your preference is for these utilities.

Sometimes popups still find a way to show up, though... If you're dealing with this kind of persistence, check out popup blocking programs like PopWash.

Step 2

Configuring the toolbar. Once installed, you can change the settings and configurations on the toolbar to make the popup blocker more effective. Even, if you do not make such changes, the blocker is quite capable of some basic blocking of ad content.

Step 3

Selecting content to block. While you can configure the blocker to block all popup content by default, you should be aware that you may not be able to access some sites which require allowing of some popup content to function properly. In such instances, the toolbar blocker will provide you with options to temporarily or permanently allow popups or other content from such sites.

Step 4

Removing adware or spyware. These are programs which are covertly installed on the computer as you browse through various sites, or come attached with any software that you download from the internet. To remove such adware or spyware, you can try using the ‘add/remove' applications from the Control Panel in your computer, or there are several programs available which help in removing these and not allowing any future installations. In case you're using Windows as your operating system, Windows Defender is a good anti-spyware program to install. Other examples of such software are Ad-Aware SE or Spybot S&D, to name a couple.

Probably the best way to avoid adware or spyware from infecting your computer is to stop downloading file-sharing programs such as CometCursor, Audiogalaxy, Overnet, Morpheus, etc. While downloading file-sharing programs, check to see whether they have adware or spyware attached. If yes, then do not download such programs.

Getting rid of annoying popups is a simple task, as is obvious from the instructions listed above. You can also check the operating system your computer uses, to check for any built-in assistance for blocking popups, adware and spyware. However, if you're someone who's not a frequent browser and are willing to live with a few popups when you surf the Web, then you can skip this article!
