I've recently noticed several posts on the HowToDoThings.com discussion board from writers looking for a way to find out how much revenue a particular article is earning them. When you log-in to your adsense account you will be shown the cumulative total earnings for the day from all of your published articles.

If you're like me, you probably have that one published article that you know is special. You went all-out for this one. You put in a little extra time and effort, added pictures, relevant links, quick tips.....Heck, you even added a video! For sure this article has to be raking in more cash and clicks than some of your others! If only there was a way you could track the adsense earnings of each individual article. Not only would it give you peace of mind, but it would also give you a heads-up on what topics and writing techniques are bringing in the most money.

Well you'll be happy to know that you can easily track the earnings and statistics of each article! It's done directly through your Google Adsense account, and is simple to do. Let's get started!

  1. Log-in to your Google Adsense account. This can be done directly from your HTDT dashboard. Once you've logged in at HTDT, go to your dashboard and find the content box titled "My Earnings". Click the link that says "My Google Adsense Info". Next click the link that says "Go To Your Google Account Page". Your browser may log you into your Google Adsense account automatically. If not you will be asked for the email address and password associated with your Google account.
  2. Click "Adsense Setup". Toward the top of the screen (directly under the Google Adsense logo) you will see several tabs. Click on the one that reads "Adsense Setup".
  3. Click "Channels". Now that you've already clicked the "Adsense Setup" tab, another row of tabs will have appeared directly below. Choose the one that says "Channels" and click on it.
  4. Click on the "Adsense For Content" tab. If it's not hyperlinked don't worry. This means you're already on the right page.
  5. Click "URL Channels". Directly under the tabs Adsense for Content and Adsense for Search, you will see two choices -- Custom channels or URL channels. Choose URL channels.
  6. Click "Add new URL channels". Enter the exact URL of the article you want to track, and click "Add channel". If you are unsure of the URL, log into your HowToDoThings.com dashboard, click on the article title in question and copy it from the browser at the top of your screen. It will look something like this: http://www.howtodothings.com/quick-tips/how-to-find-your-url. Be sure to add it correctly or it will not be monitored.
  7. Continue adding URL Channels. Create a channel for each article you have published.

These URL channels will allow you to view all sorts of information on your HowToDoThings.com articles. You'll finally know which articles are producing, and which are not. I hope you've found this useful, and encourage you to keep writing. You'd be surprised at what article may turn out to be your bread and butter.

Caution:
Google only allows 200 custom URL channels per user.
If an article is showing zero impressions/clicks for several days, it may be possible you misspelled the URL.
Quick Tips:
If you think you've misspelled a URL channel, simply delete it and add it again with the correct URL.

I keep track of my AdSense earnings using custom channels -- it's the best way to know which topics seem to get the best draw (and have the most click-happy readers!). :O)

How do you use custom channels Elizabeth? Please clarify.

Great advice. Thanks a million!

Sadaf, From what I understand a custom channel would allow you to see how much each ad unit is earning within a page. For example you could trak the earnings and stats of the ads on the left of your article, and compare them with the earnings and stats from the link units at the footer of your article.
I do not believe however that we are capable as contributors of setting up custom channels on HTDT. To set up custom channels you would be required to first add an HTML code to your webpage. We do not have access of editing this sort of thing in our published articles.
If you manage your own website or blog than you can create custom channels for those. Perhaps this is what Elizabeth is referring to? Url channels are easier to set up, and will not require any editing of the article page. If Elizabeth has any insight that would be excellent.
In the mean time I found a link for Adsense FAQ: How Do I Create Custom Channels. I hope it is helpful. Good Luck.
