Developers are constantly creating new computer programs or software applications. While many of them invent new tools and applications, others are fully dedicated to improving the already released software applications. They do this by adding in improvements or patches to the older versions of programs. These patches address the flaws -- or otherwise known as computer bugs -- to the older versions of computer programs. Since this is the case, removing certain Windows programs may be necessary once in a while so that you can replace it with the newer version. The steps outlined below discuss the safe way of uninstalling a program on a computer running on either the Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition operating systems.

  1. Access the Control Panel on your personal computer. Click on the Start button on your desktop and a pull up menu will appear. Select Control Panel by right clicking on your mouse once. The Control Panel user interface window should pop up on your computer desktop.
  2. Identify the icon that says Add or Remove Programs. From the several icons displayed, locate the Add or Remove Programs and double click on it. The Add or Remove Programs window should pop up. You will then see all of the different software applications that are presently setup on your personal computer on the currently installed programs section.
  3. Identify the program you want to uninstall from your personal computer. Locate the name and/or icon of the program or software application which you would like to have removed and right click on it once. Make sure that it really is the program you want to eliminate from your personal computer's hard disk. Modifying the settings in the Control Panel can severely affect your computer's performance so be very careful about choosing the correct name and/or of the program you wish to uninstall.
  4. Uninstall the correct Windows software application. Once the program name and/or icon are highlighted, the radio button Remove will appear alongside it. Click on Remove and simply click on Yes if ever a dialog box pops up prompting you to confirm the removal process.

Again, it is imperative that you correctly identify the correct name and/or icon of the program or software application you want to have uninstalled from your personal computer. There are some software applications that will no longer display dialog boxes to prompt the user to confirm the process of removal. Simply clicking on Remove without being absolutely sure you want it eradicated from the hard disk may cause your computer to malfunction or even crash.
