Planning an actual auction is like planning a long vacation to a foreign nation.  You have to do a lot of organizing and communicating to take control of the unknown variables.  When an auction has to happen, one of the key tasks that you have to do is to know each item and categorize them. This means that you have do a lot of back breaking work.   A simple yet more effective way of dealing with this problem is by collaborating with modern technology.  This method does not spare you from the backbreaking work, but it does eliminate the need to actually put up a real infrastructure for your auction business.  Items can be sold and delivered straight from their sources, while the buyers sit in the comfort of their homes.  If you want to be an owner of an auction site, all you need to do is to use auction software and learn how to use it.   Here are the steps.

  1. Look for the software.  Several Internet auction companies would allow you to download their auction software for free.  The only catch is that you will be paying them when you put an auction through them.  Another method that you can use is by purchasing portable storage devices like DVDs that are being sold by auction software companies.  What makes this software important is that it can allow you to hold an auction online or offline.
  2. Installing it.  Different companies have varied ways in programming their software.  A company might require you to download their program using DOS, which could get very complicated.  You might also need to ask somebody to help you out to ensure that the system will work.  Other companies are more user-friendly, and will provide you with their system that is almost instantly ready to use.  Whether your software comes from a DVD or the Internet, you will be provided with a manual on how to install it on your hard drive.
  3. Filling out the specifications.  Before you can actually post any item for auction, you have to fill out a form that will contain the details about the items and other facts related to the items or auction tools, like tax deductions, delivery dates, description of the items, pictures, auction script, etc.  This will be the information that will be displayed on the website.
  4. Look at the preview.  An auction needs to be perfectly ready before you show your items to your clients.  Most auction software has a feature that can let you view the webpage so that you can do your evaluation.  This will allow you to check if there are details that might need to be modified because it might dissuade some customers.  You may choose to keep your auction secrets if you find some facts about your item unappealing.
  5. Posting your items.  The last and the most awaited part of the entire process is when you post your item on the website.  You do not have to do a lot to accomplish this, because you only need to click a button.  Once you are ready to post your item, all you have to do is look for that icon that says “Start the Bidding” or some other terms.

Online auction software, like eBay, might seem intimidating but once you have started the first few steps, it gets easier.
