Keep your computer secure. Install both anti-virus and anti-spyware. Update these regularly so you are protected from the latest threats. Enabling a personal firewall will also keep malicious intruders out. Also, leave out of your computer your credit card numbers or your bank password. Always sign out from the sites you did transactions after completing such. Most sites now automatically sign you off after a few minutes of no action but it's much better to sign out yourself to be certain. Know that your credit card number can be obtained straight from your computer. By just surfing some web sites or unsuspectingly open e-mail attachments, your computer can get infected with malicious software (malware). Some of these can hide in your system and record your keystrokes (keyloggers they are called). These keystrokes contain your credit card number and personal information as well.
Use your card only with reputable businesses. Use your card only with companies you have heard of. Find out more about them before you make a purchase. Read about their privacy policy. You often skip this and just click "I agree" as there is so much to read. But take the time. Find out the security controls the site has in place to protect your information. Also, their information sharing policy as some share your information with third parties.
Only enter your card details in secure web sites. How do you check if the site is secure? When you place the address of the site you will see that an additional "s" to http comes up. It reads https://. This "s" signifies that the site uses encryption so only you and this site's owner can read the information you input. Outsiders are not able to read such. Another sign that the site uses encryption is a closed padlock icon next to the address bar or at the bottom of the browser. If you click on this padlock, it will give you the real identity of the site.
Protect your self from phishing. Phishing includes e-mails apparently sent from your bank or credit card issuer asking for your personal information such as your password as there is a reported problem in your credit card account. Delete these. Don't reply. Your banks have on record your personal information so they don't have to ask these from you. At times, your bank will have these phishing alerts in their site so read these alert services regularly. Each time you do a credit card transaction online, type the address yourself or check the address bar for the correct one with the required https://. Sign-up with your bank's secure sign-in procedure. Change your online password as needed.
Avoid doing credit card transactions in public computers. It is always a good idea to use your own computer but sometimes when you are traveling, you just can't avoid using Internet cafes. If you can avoid it, just don't do sensitive transactions in these computers as the Café can monitor your transactions through their network or their computers may be infected with malicious software that can access your personal information.
Get a credit card with very low limit. If you can't help but use your credit card in public computers like when you are traveling, arrange with your bank or credit card issuer to have one credit card with a VERY low limit, say not more than $500 or even less depending on the type of purchases you make online as well as the allowable lowest limit policy of your credit card issuer. If you use only this one on the net, you really limit the damage that can be done.
Print and keep your receipt or a record of your transaction. Some online sites send you a receipt or a confirmation page to your e-mail address or it gives it to you immediately after the transaction is completed. Keep a printed copy so you have your evidence when something happens. Keep these receipts in a secure place as anyone can just copy and use your credit card number if you are not careful.
Monitor your credit card account. Your credit card issuer has your account details in their website or you can do this by phone so you immediately catch transactions not your own. Change your password in these sites as needed. Immediately verify and report suspicious transactions with your credit card issuer.
