The internet is a valuable resource for job seekers. Companies can post job openings on their own websites or post their open jobs on job search engines. Make sure to check both, because companies may use just one or the other.
The first step to using a job search engine is to find the names and locations of the more popular ones. The two biggest engines are www.monster.com and www.careerbuilder.com. These two sites would be a good place to start. To find federal job postings you would want to check out www.usajobs.gov. For state job postings, run a web search for your state's home page; open positions should be posted there. Another popular website job seekers is craigslist.org.
Once you access one of these websites, you will notice that they have the option to search for keywords and locations. In the keyword field, enter what type of job you'd like. For example, you can enter sales; the results would direct you to sales jobs near your location. In the location search box, you can either put in your city and state or your zip code.
Once you run your search, the site should bring up job titles, company names, and the distance from your location. You can normally organize the search results based on location, date of job posting, name of job, or name of company. Click on a job title and it will provide additional information about that specific position. Job postings normally give a detailed description of the job duties along with the minimum qualifications.
If you find a job that you are interested in applying for, there will normally be a button labeled apply for this position. Click on this button. Some sites may require you to register in order to apply for positions. Other sites may allow you to upload your resume and apply without registering.
One other important function offered on these job search engines is the ability to post your resume and have companies contact you. With this option you should be careful to not put too much personal information on your resume. Many dubious companies or scammers read through posted resumes to find victims.
It is important to realize that although these sites can be valuable to your job search, you should not ignore other methods of finding a job, including the tried-and-true method of asking friends and acquaintances if they know of any job openings for which you might be qualified.
