Using remix software is a great way to add a personal touch to your favorite audio tracks. Remix software, also known as audio editing software, allows you to add a wide range of effects to any audio track. Remix software varies, but in most instances, you can follow these basic steps.

  1. Determine the type of remix software. There are a variety of audio editing software applications available. If you are only using the software to create remixes, then consider a basic editor. Some basic editors, like Audacity, are available as free downloads. If you intend to go beyond the creation of remixes, you might consider a more robust editor with advanced capabilities like recording original music or one that includes advanced filters for restoring damaged audio tracks. These more robust editors, in general, have a heftier price tag.
  2. Capture the music for remixing. The next step for creating a remix, regardless of the software application, is to pull in the track(s) for remixing. In most remixing software, an option is provided, allowing you to either import audio, or open an audio file. Once the file is open, a graphical representation of the file is displayed on your screen. From this screen you can play the track, or begin the remixing.
  3. Add your effects. The remixing process can involve numerous effects. You might loop a portion of the track multiple times. You might add effects to the entire track, or to specific portions of the track. You might inter-mix pieces of multiple tracks. Even the most basic remixing software allows these types of edits. Most offer the ability to amplify a track, or change the speed of the audio. Most have options to fade in and fade out the audio. The beauty of remixing software is that each of these effects is offered via a dropdown menu or an icon. Simply highlight the section of the audio you wish to alter, and then select the effect. Many basic edit commands, like highlight, cut, paste and copy, are used in the same way you might use them in any other software application.
  4. Burn your music to the appropriate media. Not all remix software applications offer the ability to burn your edited tracks onto a CD or an MP3 player, but many do. When you are finished with your remix, export or save your finished track to the desired media.
