Hi! This is Amy and welcome to Eating Low.
Today, I don’t have a recipe for you but I do have a product to review. And you guys know I rarely ever have done a product review. But this is a great little product that I do want to share with you because it will be helpful to somebody out there who’s trying to lose weight. And when I was losing weight, weighing your food is really important. It helped me see the portion sizes and also you need that if you’re going to enter your food into like food day or daily plate, you need to know how much it weighs.
So, I have a food scale, but that’s all it did. It didn’t tell you the carbs or anything so it was this multiple stuff process, you’re weighing your food then you’re running off to the computer to enter your food. And if you’ve already eaten your food, well you know if you may eat 10 carbs of broccoli, then too late, you’ve already eaten it. What’s great about this scale is that you can weigh your food and get the nutrition information all while you’re preparing the food. So, you don’t have to run back and forth to see your computer, you don’t really have to plan ahead as much and that’s really great. So, this is the EatSmart Nutrition scale and it is different than my food scale, my old one. It’s got more buttons and don’t be intimidated by this because it will get simpler as you go along. My old scale only had three buttons, this has tons of stuff but it does weigh more than my scale that I used to have.
So, what’s also great about this scale is that you can calculate an entire meal on your plate right on the one scale at one time. And to me, that’s what totally separates it from all the other food scales that I’ve seen. So, to do that, you’re going to set your plate on the scale. My scale is currently off. When you turn the scale on, it’s going to zero it out. Now, if for some reason you turn on your scale and then put the plate on, you will just hit the tear button and that zeroes out the scale so it’s not weighing the weight of the plate.
So, what we’re going to do is take some chicken and this is a pretty average, like I’m going to try and create a meal, it’s a little basic, just for demonstration purposes. And then we’re going to put a bunch of chicken on the scale. Now, we have to tell it what that is because it has all that information in the scale. You just have to access it. So, we’ve got our chicken on there. The code for chicken, which they’ve got in book that you’ve got with your scale that lists all the foods, you know, it’s the basic foods that you mean.
And so, I looked up on my book and I found chicken breast roasted, no skin, and that code is 441. So, I type that in. This is dry meat. There’s a 153 calories in this batch chicken, zero carbs and zero fiber which we know, it’s a meat, you know there’s not going to be carbs or fiber.
But what’s also great is if you press the 1, 2, 3, 4 key, it will give you more nutrients. So, we can see that there’s sodium, 68 grams. You’ve got potassium, 238 grams. Some of these numbers don’t mean that much to me. I don’t track my potassium levels and things like that but somebody may care. If you press it again, you’ve got your fat is 3 grams of fat. I was making it heavy because I was weighing it. Saturated fat is 0.9 and cholesterol is 79. And if you press it again, you can see that you’ve got calcium, they’ve also got protein, it’s 29 grams of protein. And that’s important for people who track their protein and want to know how much protein they’re eating a day.
And another thing that’s great about this is you get used to seeing how much is 29 grams of protein. Well right here, now I’ve got a visual cue and I can match the two together. It’s not something that’s abstract on my computer. It’s actually right there in front of me. And that to me is important because it’s training you to eat the right portion sizes and how much of a portion size is going to weigh what, how many carbs, how many calories. These are all important things, not only for losing weight but for maintenance.
So, we’ve got out chicken weighed up. We’re going to press the memory button and that saves it to the memory. So now, we want to add some broccoli because we’re going to have some broccoli with our chicken. So, I’m going to zero out the scale and that sets everything to zero. We’re going to grab our broccoli, put it on the plate. Then we’re going to get our code for broccoli which is 086 so I type in 086. And there you can see that there is about 16 calories, the carbs are three grams of carbs and so on and so on. So we’re going to save that to memory and then I want to grab my last just to make everything is big meal here. I’m having a lot of veggies today. We’re going to zero it out again and put some cauliflower on there. And then we’re going to take on the cauliflower code which is 101 and that will pop that up. And now you can see your carbs, you’ve got three grams of carbs in that little serving of the cauliflower. I’m going to hit the memory button again. And so, we’ve saved all that.
Now, when we want to see the entire—what is on this plate, how many carbs am I eating in this whole plate of food, you do the memory recall. And that will show you that your weight and right now the weight is in grams but you can also switch it to ounces so it’s somewhat 0.2 oz of food. That doesn’t really mean that much to me because it’s chicken and the broccoli and the cauliflower but if you’re wanting to see like the weight of your chicken, you can do that. But now at the bottom, you can see that your calories for this whole meal would be a 187 calories, 6.5 grams of carbs, 2.8 grams of fiber. And as I go through the other nutrition, you can see the sodium is a 104 just all that stuff so like the fat is 3.7. I mean these are all helpful numbers and you can see it all right here on the plate. You don’t have to go running off to your computer and enter it into fit day, you can see it right there on the plate and on the scale. It’s right there for you so you know you can eat this.
Okay this is a six grams of carbs in this whole meal and you’ve now just trained your eye that maybe next time you will not, you know it’s good to weigh your food all the time but I can see now that my chicken is about this much, this much and this much. If I want a meal that has about six grams of carbs and that’s going to be—that’s pretty reasonable. I mean that’s a great meal for—if you’re doing it with carb. This is the perfect meal.
So, there’s one other feature that I’m going to show you about the scale that makes it different than the other scales. A really great feature of this scale that I haven’t seen on any of the other scales is that you can calculate the calories and carbs and things like that, the foods that aren’t even in their little database of their booklet that they give you that has all the standard foods. So, this is Cocoa Roast Almonds. I guarantee you this is not in their listing of foods. It’s brand new. It’s something I’ve never seen in the store and it’s a little different. It’s not—I mean you could weigh almonds but the nutrition data might not be the same because this is a little different, it’s got the coco and stuff. So, you can enter the information from the package label, the nutrition data label into the scale and that way you’ll be able to weigh it.
So, we’ve got our almonds and we have our scale. We’re all ready to go. We’re going to switch modes so press the mode button. I’m going to press serving. Now, from—I ripped off the label but if you look at your label to see what a serving size is, mine says 28 grams so we’re going to enter 028 and that’s 28 grams. Then we’re going to hit nutrition and it shows—I want to know how many carbs there are going to be in my serving of almonds. So on here, they say one serving size of 28 grams of almonds is six grams of carbs. So, I’m going to enter six and then I’ll put my almonds in the bowl. I’m just going to put them there. And then we’ll press equals and it shows you that this little serving that it just comes out is five grams of carbs. And if you add a little more, like that, looks a lot more than I had before. Now, it’s eight grams of carbs. So, it calculates it as you add or subtract. And that makes it really handy. That’s a feature I have never seen on any other scale and I think that’s just what makes this scale so different than any of the other scales.
So, that is the EatSmart Nutrition Scale. You can go and get. If you would like to get this, you can get it from their website. It’s eatsmartproducts.com and they’ve been nice enough to give my viewers a 10% off discount, woohoo! If you type in the words eatinglow, all one word and I’ll put that on the video so you’ll probably see it like somewhere around here, after I edit it all in, if you go to their website, you can order it. It’s $75.00, the scale which is more expensive. I think my Taylor Scale which is the average generic scale that I got at Target and it just does the weight and stuff. It was probably around $30.00 so it is a higher price scale but you are getting so many more features. And I think that does make up for it plus the 10% discount, that’s great!
So anyway, thanks for eating low with Amy.
