Why it's hard to stay on a low-carb diet

Welcome to Body Performance, I am Steve Turano. This is the second broadcast and a two part series on low carb diets. In the first broadcast, we talked about low carb diets and why they work. They work because you are eating pure calories, not because you are eating pure carbohydrates. Even though you are eating a lot of fats and proteins by the end of the day you still have eaten less, so you begin to loose weight. Low carb diets work, because you do not have the mental anguish of sacrificing. They allow you to eat what you want so you do not worry about it. Also fats and proteins are very filling. So once you are full, you do not decide to eat anything else. Here are some of the bad aspects about this diet. Number one, carbohydrates are unnecessary sugars for the body. They provide immediate energy. If you are an athlete or you have ever been on a low carb diet. You will notice that sometimes you just do not have the same snack. You are a little sluggish. That is because sugar has to then come from the break down of fats and proteins. This is a slow process that does not supply you with ready available sugar like carbohydrates do. The other aspect is your is your brain runs up carbohydrates. So some people have the tendency to be a little sluggish mentally if you are in a low carb diet. The other aspect of this diet that I do not like is this, if you are on a low carb diet, you have to go through life never eating breads, pastas, potatoes or rice. That would suck. That is not a great way to get through life that might have been a sacrifice. Some of the science about this diet it does not work either. They back ketosis in a fat burning state. Here is my question, when you are eating all this fat, but yet you still have fat on your mid section or on your hips. How does your body know which of those two fat sources to utilize? It does not make sense. Even though you are burning fat, let us say, you are burning fat all day long, your body still has to choose. Do I work on the fat that I just ate or the fat that is around my stomach? You see, it still comes down to calories in and calories out. You still have to take in fewer calories then you burn up. If you do that, you loose weight. And the easiest way to do that is on a regular diet. Eat what you like, just eat less. Exercise a little more and weight loss will occur. I will see you next time. Love your body.
