Each year, millions of college graduates enter the workforce after completing their various undergraduate or graduate degrees. Many of these graduates are in the field of education. Teaching is a field where talented applicants are in constant demand.
Although a teaching career can be highly rewarding, it is a very difficult job. Certain fields of education are in higher demand than others. Special education is an area where there are always jobs available for qualified teachers. Even though there are plenty of opportunities for job placement, many graduates don't know where to begin looking for employment.
The first place to begin your search is the career development center at your university. Registering with them can give you access to campus job fairs and other interviews that may be available to university graduates. The job fairs that you attend through the career development center can help you land your first teaching job.
You can also begin your search at the board of education in the city or county where you would like to work. The board of education should have a listing of job vacancies at various schools in their system. These vacancies can often be viewed on their web site. The job vacancies have brief descriptions of each position and the qualifications that are needed. Make sure your application is on file with the school system, and apply for specific vacancies that interest you.
There are other routes to finding teaching jobs, such as: apply for the substitute teaching position. This may not be the job that you visualized yourself doing, but the chance to prove yourself will be worth it. Substituting can allow you to get hands-on experience and meet other teachers and administrators who can view your level of competence. When a vacancy becomes available, you will have had the opportunity to network; if you have presented yourself well, you may land a job.
In the quest to find teaching jobs, many people make use of the classifieds section in their local newspaper. Positions listed in the classifieds are often not with a school system; however, the jobs that are available can give you the opportunity to gain valuable teaching experience. Many of the teaching positions advertised in the classifieds are with private schools, tutorial programs, daycare centers and parochial schools. Although these private institutions may not be your dream job it is a start. Many times they can offer competitive salaries with good benefits.
