Home schooling has been an acceptable alternative to formal education in public or private schools. Most developed countries provide this as a legal option for their citizens. Most parents who prefer this for their children cite unsafe conditions in schools and lack or absence of religious instructions in conventional schools. Some also want to have more control over their children's curriculum and so choose home schooling for their kids. While there are many advantages, when not implemented well, home schooling may stunt the child's learning. So following these simple steps may be useful to avoid interruptions to home schooling and ensure that your child gets the best possible instruction while at home.
- Set a schedule. Once you have decided that home schooling is the way to go for your child then you should be able to strictly adhere to a set schedule. This should not only include time for studying, but time for rest and recreation as well. Given that home schooled kids tend to get lonely since they do not get to interact with other children, setting aside some time off the study schedule for some play time will lift the pressure off your child's shoulder and not be resentful of the home school setup you chose for him.
- Turn off devices that will distract you. Cellular phones, the television or computers should be turned off when you are teaching your child. This way, unnecessary distractions are minimized. Radios should be turned off too. While some find listening to music conducive to studying, it would certainly affect your child's focus.
- Consider a change of scenery. Another advantage of home schooling is that the child gets to study in an environment he can be comfortable in and still get as much knowledge as he can of things that are not normally taught in a conventional school setup. Maximize this advantage by bringing your child to other places like the libraries, museums, parks or zoos. The weekend market is another very good place to bring your child to. Not only will he get to know how his food actually looks like before it's on his plate, but he gets to acquire knowledge on how to buy healthy and nutritious food.
Home schooling can be very challenging. But careful setting of daily study schedule and itinerary coupled with a little creativity can be an empowering and memorable experience for both the parent and the child.
