What is Popular or Not?

As a teacher myself, I have received numerous gifts throughout the years. Although gifts are optional, they are considered to be a display of appreciation. When a child feels sad because he or she has no gift to give me, I always remind him or her that a smile, a thank you or a drawing are precious gifts of appreciation to any teacher. It puts a smile on their face and mine as well. After all, it is not the gift but the intention behind it, as they say, that makes the difference.
On the other hand, many parents and children are on the prowl for the "perfect" gift for teachers. How do you choose the perfect gift for your child's teacher? Simply follow these few tips and you will hit the "bulls-eye" by getting the perfect gift.
- Children's creations are always a hit! As a teacher, the gifts that I have cherished the most and still are displayed either in my home or at school, are creations that have been made by my students. They come from the heart and show that they took the time and put the effort to make such a gift. You can't miss your target with this and it often gives a break to your budget as the holidays are the most expensive time of the year.
- Homemade gifts are great! Like the children's creations, this type of gift has taken time, effort and often involves the participation of your child, which shows the teacher a lot of caring and appreciation from your child and yourself.
- Allergies must be considered at all times! Ask the teacher yourself, or with your child's help, if he or she has allergies. The last thing that you want to do is give them something that sends them to the hospital, such as nuts. As for myself, perfumed gifts are put away or given away as I am allergic to it and cannot breath near these items. Such items as potpourri containing roses and other strong fragrances, perfume and scented candles are big no-no for someone allergic to fragrances or affected by asthma.
- Taking notice of certain habits! Does your child's teacher like coffee, tea or chocolate maybe? Do they celebrate the holidays with a Christmas tree? Do they were decorative pins or have a lot of keys? A gift certificate or a gift card from a well-known coffee shop may be welcomed by a coffee drinker. A box containing various tea flavours may be welcomed by the tea drinker. An original keychain, a box of chocolates, a Christmas ornament or a decorative pin may also be a great gift to give your child's teacher.
- Involve your child by making them a "Sherlock Holmes". Have your child ask questions of his or her teacher. What is their favorite color? Do they have a favorite sport's team? Do they like animals? These questions could provide a good theme for a cup, a calendar, a pen or an agenda. What are their favorite hobbies and treats? These may also give you some ideas, such as movie passes or a gift certificate for popcorn and other types of treats.
- Gifts related to a teacher's profession are useful gifts! Stickers, automatic pencils, markers, notepads, an agenda or a calendar are always good gifts to give to your child's teacher. They are relevant and will definitely be used in class.
- No cups or mugs, chocolates or candles! The following gifts are nice but unfortunately, when a teacher receives 5 or 6 at each special occasion, there is no more room left where to put them. In some cases, a teacher could actually make a rummage sale with them all as there are so many. The following items are: chocolates, cups and candles. If you get something that is not on this list, you are more likely to give your child's teacher a "unique" gift.
- Don't take things for granted! Some people have given me a certificate claiming to have given a donation in my name to a certain cause or charity, such as donating a tree for the environment. The thought may be nice, especially as it may be yours and was given to your favorite cause or charity, but it may not represent the teacher's belief. If you intend to do so, at least ask the teacher the name of a cause or charity that he or she believes in rather than making a choice yourself. This way you do not speak for them and do not ignore their say.
Now that you have read these tips, you will certainly find it easier to give your child's teacher a gift that is unique, useful, safe and that aligns with their preferences. Don't feel overwhelmed or confused. Simply use these tips to facilitate your quest.
