How To Find an Educational Program to Learn English

Every courthouse has an information office.  If you go there and request forms to file to apply for United States citizenship, you can not only pick up a form with instructions, but you can ask about English language classes being offered in the community. You will have to answer questions in English to qualify for citizenship.

English as a second language classes are offered in career centers as night school classes.  Just about every local school district also has English as a second language if they have a large enough immigrant population.  For classes in English as a second language offered at night in local schools, you can call the school board during the day and inquire.

Some foreign students who attend college in the United States and are having difficulties due to language should also consider attending an English as a Second Language course offered by local school districts.  Most English classes taught in colleges have nothing to do with teaching English as a second language.  Even remedial English classes taught in some colleges as non credit classes are primarily aimed for English speaking students.  Learning English as a new language involves the same basic structure as learning Italian or Greek.  The teaching techniques required to pick up a foreign language are the same techniques used to teach English as a language.

If you are interested in how to find an English language learner education program just call your local board of education and ask them about adult classes being offered for English as a second language.  If they offer night classes, you will have no problem in locating the class.  If they don't have those classes in their school, they should be able to direct you to a school system that does offer English as a second language.

Learning to speak English can also be done in the privacy of your own home.  There are books and self teaching tapes that can lead you to speak English much like an English speaker can buy tapes of Spanish and learn the Spanish language.  The models used to learn English as a language are usually involved with vocabulary, diction, phrases and asking questions in English.  You should begin to work privately with these self teaching tapes before attending a class for English as a second language.  Many of the students there will already have a functioning grasp of English, but not enough to meet some work standards which is probably why they attend English as a foreign language class in the first place.
