"All work and no play make Jack a dull boy" – It's a cliche but so true! With mounting pressure on academic excellence and stiff competition, children could either lose the vigor for achieving excellence or develop stress and related problems. An easy and effective way of keeping the "zing" alive in children's psyche is to have fun activities in grade school. These could either be indoor or outdoor activities. However, the key factor that must be considered while chalking out or conducting a fun activity is the children's age group. While younger kids prefer more fun-only activities, older kids may want activities that engage their minds along with their bodies. Therefore getting the right mix is crucial to draw kids' attention and keep them involved. Here's how to have fun activities at school.

Ball games never run short of excitement. They are the best fun physical education games particularly for elementary school children. There are a number of variations with ball games - dodge ball, kickball, softball, volleyball, handball and so on. Try this game called "Cats in the Corner." Mark a square play area with the ball thrower in the center of the square. Each of the corners is a designated safe zone where all the remaining players ("Cats") will be. The thrower calls out and the cats have to run from one corner to another including diagonally, but must not be hit with the ball. Whoever gets hit by the ball will be considered out. If you have a large group you can have several balls and a couple of throwers. This will keep the kids wanting more.

Learning/skill games cannot only be fun, but will also help in improving concentration levels, memory and observation skills in children. Word building, scrabble and spell check are a definite hit as far as learning games are concerned. Check out these two learning games that will keep the kids' mind at work:

  1. Take some large beans or small items to hold in your hands and pick a number, let's say 9. Have the player count the total number 9. Take the selected number of beans and place them in one hand. Put both hands behind your back and move some beans into the empty hand. Show the player the beans in one hand and the player must guess the number of beans you have in the other. This helps your child learn all the combinations of number sums.
  2. Have all the players lined up in a straight line. Players must be asked to guess when a minute is up and take a step back when they think a minute is up. Do not give away any verbal or non-verbal clues. The person closest to the minute is a winner.

There are loads of online portals from which you can pick fun activities that can be conducted in schools. It is a universal fact that every child loves to play. So fight boredom and keep your children entertained with these easy to play games.
