For Those Who Need a Holiday the Most on the Smallest Budget

Difficulty: Very Easy
Cost: $1-$50

After all the hard work of study, lectures, writing assignments and trying to maintain your social life, you'll be in need of a great vacation... but then comes the issue of funding that getaway. As students, we don't have a lot of cash, but we still want to have a great holiday. There are lots of student discounts out there, but which ones are best when it comes to great holidays?

  1. Grab yourself an ISIC card (International Student Identity Card). You can sign up for this online or find out more through your college or university. You will get discounts all over the world at thousands of different locations such as restaurants, online stores, retail stores, transport, sport venues, entertainment venues and museums and cultural venues. There is a small charge to obtain an ISIC card. However, if you use it enough, you will recoup the initial cost in no time.

Check out the ISIC website for more information on discounts available in your area or the area where you will be traveling. If you don't have or want an ISIC card, be sure to flash your student card everywhere you go and ask for a discount.

  2. Check out STA travel. They are the student travel experts and have fantastic discounts and specials that only apply to people who hold a valid student card or ISIC card. They can hook you up with all the information you'll need about working holidays, some of the cheapest holidays around. They can organize domestic and international fares including discounted 'round-the-world fares. They can organize discounted accommodation and tours and even car hire for you. This can all be done online but if you prefer the face-to-face approach, they have plenty of retail outlets all around the world. Check out their website to find your closest location.
  3. Book early or book late. Booking early can often get you great discounts on airfares, but the later you leave it to book your airfare the more expensive it will be. Booking accommodation is almost the exact opposite; there are hundreds of websites that offer great last-minute accommodation deals. You can find rooms for up to and under half price depending on how close to your stay you book. I don't recommend choosing last-minute bookings if you are visiting a location for a popular event as hotels may well be fully booked out.

Simply conduct a Google search with the location you want followed by 'last minute accommodation'. Your options will be endless, but always check out the website of the hotel or hotels you are interested in as they will probably offer a similar discount without the middleman and fees associated with that.

  4. Consider your destination. Whether you're traveling for spring break, your study abroad program or any number of other reasons, you should try to take advantage of your student status. There are not only great discounts, but also fun activities, events and sights in places like Sydney, Australia, San Diego, CA (and other beach areas), Atlanta, GA, Maui, Hawaii, St. Louis, MO, Paris, France, etc. You can go to Disneyland or go backpacking in Northern California. Whatever you decide to do, make sure to bring your student ID and ask about deals.

Hopefully you'll be able to enjoy a great holiday on a student budget with the help of these handy discount travel tips!
