We've all felt that tension as we approach a test, especially if it's an important one. Our hearts start to flutter, our stomachs groan uneasily, and we begin to worry if we're going to do well. Unfortunately this nervousness is counterproductive. It's harder to concentrate and remember important information when all you're thinking about is how important this grade is. Here's how to stay calm while taking these tests.

  1. The first and most obvious step is to be prepared. Space out your studying over multiple sessions and start at least a week before your test. If you know the material, you'll be much less worried. Be sure to take a look at any study guides that have been provided, as this will give you a better idea of what to know and what not to worry about.
  2. It's a good idea to have your materials prepared as well. Put everything you're going to need in one place the night before so you don't have to search for it frantically in the morning. Make sure you know what is and isn't allowed. If you're allowed to bring in one page of notes, make good use of it. If you aren't allowed to use your calculator, make sure you practice without it.
  3. Try to get a good night of sleep before the test and have breakfast that morning. You will be more distracted and thus more uneasy if you're physically uncomfortable. Keep the classroom in mind as well. If it's usually cold, bring a jacket along.
  4. Once you're actually taking the test, listen carefully to all the instructions. Remind yourself that you know the material and stay calm. Remember that you can ask questions if anything is unclear instead of dwelling on the problem.
  5. If you feel yourself beginning to get anxious, take a few slow, deep breaths. Concentrate on any tension you feel in your muscles and make yourself relax. Remind yourself that you will do better on the test if you are calm and confident than if you are nervous. Remember that in the absolute worst case scenario, you may have to take the test again or make up for it with extra hard work throughout the year. Even if you did fail this test, it would not be the end of the world, so it's okay to be calm.
  6. Read all of the instructions thoroughly and be careful when reading the questions so you don't misunderstand anything. Be aware of time constraints, but don't obsess about them. Look over your answers at the end of the test so that you can feel more confident about your work.

Any type of exam can be intimidating, but with some preparation and concentration, you can stay calm while taking your tests.
