How To Prepare for College Lectures

How to Make an Outline for Term Papers

As difficult as it may seem to be never feel intimated when you write your term papers. It definitely needs hard work from you but as soon as you learn the basics, you will feel confident about writing this task on your own. The first step is by drafting an outline.

Step 1

STEP 1. First, choose a topic that will interest you and your readers and at the same time, weigh the value of your topic whether this will be helpful in the society or not. A lot of students submit research papers just for the sake of passing a subject. However, there should always be a significant purpose in writing these tasks, other than academic completion.

Step 2

STEP 2. Once you have chosen a topic, you are ready to compose your thesis sentence. Thesis sentence or statement summarizes the discussion presented in the term papers. For example, if you chose the Internet as a general topic, you can be specific by stating in the thesis sentence: The Internet is a technological educational tool that can guide students with their research and learning skills thus should be provided in all schools.

Step 3

STEP 3. Next, create main headings for the outline. These main headings refer to different points that contribute to the thesis sentence.

III. Students’ Benefits

IV. Funding

Notice that there are four main headings for discussion. Other term papers have more main headings and are lengthier depending on the subject.

Step 4

STEP 4. Next, you can incorporate subheadings as these will guide you with the flow of your discussion. You can refer to the additional subheadings under each main point.

Keep in mind that you can use different formats when writing an outline for your term papers. You can find a thorough discussion on the various outline formats in your textbooks or by searching the World Wide Web. The most common though is a topical outline, but you can also use a sentence outline. Make sure that you strictly follow one format for a single term paper.
