The youth are the future builders of the world. However, no matter how hard you deny it, not all of them are capable of being in this position. This becomes the responsibility of the current leaders—to teach them to develop into better and more competent individuals not only for today but also for the future. One of the solutions being offered is a youth development program.
More often than not, youth education is being offered by different organizations and institutions. Mostly, they differ on their approaches for helping the youth in surviving the world they are in as well as facing the future. However, it needs to be noted that those behind these programs need to properly know how to teach children appropriately. This is to ensure a positive result to the youth community.
So whether you are a youth professional or volunteer, here are some reminders on how to effectively teach youth empowerment programs:
- Ambiance - Make sure that the whole youth community feels emotionally and physically safe. This is not only in terms of the classroom or the training area, but also how each of them is treated.
- Experience - In every youth project, it is not the fun and enjoyment that is important. Aside from the feeling of security, they need to feel they are accepted by you, if not by the whole community.
- Worthiness - The programs and activities need to be directed into finding their self-worth as a person of today and the future.
- Relationships - You need to give quality time spent with their peers and adults. This will develop their leadership, social, and relationship skills, among others.
- Pride - Reward every possible success they encounter. As you know, the youth always take pride when they do things that they think are far beyond what they think they can do.
- Lessons - As youths are sensitive, treat their mistakes in a different manner. Make them feel that mistakes they have committed are natural and can be used as lessons to improve their lives.
- Accountability - Assign them any leadership opportunities. When a youth is accounted for a specific group, he tends to become more responsible and sociable.
- Ability - Devise programs that will focus on the youth's physical health, intellectual health, mental health, employability, and social involvement.
- Exposure - Let the youth be exposed to the real situation on their surroundings as well as the world that can affect them. Let them devise youth project strategies on how they will remedy each problem and turn out to be winners in the situation.
- Freedom - Give them freedom to express what they want to say and listen to them. Understand each other's differences and from that, devise your strategies to help them.
The secret about the success of any youth project is not on the youth education being given to them. It is in fact the facilitators that handle and shape each of them. If all those who are handling youth empowerment programs know how to properly interact with the youth, there is no question that success is on the way in terms of youth development. So deal with the youth the right way. You are the key for what they will become tomorrow.
