What is Interactive Learning

In this modern age, those who have knowledge have power. But not everyone gets a chance to acquire formal education that would equip him with knowledge needed to conquer this information-driven age. Even those at school do not necessarily get the knowledge and skill they need for the world outside. Much of its success depends on the method the educators employ to forward information to their students. The traditional classroom set up, where students sit and listen to the lectures of the teachers while taking down notes, is not a one-size-fits-all approach. It is not everything a student needs. Interactive learning is one method that perfectly compliments the lecture-type approach. It completes the whole picture the students need.

Interactive learning simply means hands-on learning experience. It is an approach where the students attain information through actual or hands-on experience, one that is interactive. Interactive learning is the direct counterpart of lecture-type learning. It is the active learning process as opposed to the passive system of a lecture-type. In interactive learning, the students use tangible objects to acquire information. Teachers do not directly pass the information to them, neither are they spoon-fed with information. Instead, they acquire the information themselves by allowing them to discover it. Of course, guidance by teachers is still extremely necessary. They still provide initial information to the students, as well as the equipments necessary for the entire process.

The usual equipment used in this process are the computers. Different subjects require different tangible objects. For sciences subjects like chemistry and biology, experiments are the best tools to give the students firm grasp of all the concepts. It is better that they see the results and processes on their own. For mathematics, teachers may give tangible objects to visualize mathematical concepts. Starters can easily learn the basics like addition and subtraction if there are actual objects in place. Now, there are various software that can easily be loaded to computers that can be used to reinforce the theoretical knowledge of the children. As early as 6-months old, a child can already be taught with knowledge through educational toys. For child development experts, the combination of passive or lecture-type and active or interactive learning are the best approach towards complete learning process. Today, most schools incorporate this approach to compliment the lectures given to the students. They employ different computer software to aid their lectures, as well as a number of interactive websites.

Truly, those who conquered and controlled knowledge conquered the world. If we want our children to survive the juggles of the outside world, we would have to supply them the necessary tools. And the only tool is proper education. The task at hand is to provide the right education. Not just the education for the sake that we can call ourselves educated, but one that is genuine. This genuine education can only be acquired through the proper mixture and balance of both passive learning and interactive learning. It is not enough that students be lectured. There should be a guarantee that what has been lectured will be supplied by proper practical knowledge.
