DVD sales have greatly increased especially now that more and more consumers are opting for their very own home entertainment systems. DVDs however are very prone to damages and scratches. Here are a few useful tips on how to keep your DVDs in good shape.

  1. Exercise care whenever removing a DVD from its case. Carelessly taking out a DVD from its case can result in some nasty and irreparable damages. The most common would be breaks in the DVD’s middle part. This is why practicing caution every time you pull out a DVD from its box or plastic wallet container is very crucial to assure that you get to always keep your priced DVDs in good shape.
  2. Pack away your DVDs properly. Proper storage of DVDs is very important if you want to really take good care of your DVD collection. Most of us tend to just leave them lying around on top of our television sets or coffee table especially if they are used often. The most common victims of this neglect are DVDs containing our favorite games or closely followed television series. That is why you should always put DVDs back into their respective boxes or plastic wallet containers after every use. If you have thrown the original containers or boxes away, or are just refusing to use them because they are bulky and tend to clutter your shelf, then it would be a good idea to store your DVDs in specially made book-like containers with sleeves. This way, you avoid exposing your DVD collection to scratches, dust, crumbs and other harmful substances such as grease which could greatly affect their functionality and playability.
  3. Employ only the right cleaning procedures. The most vulnerable portion of a DVD is its side containing all of the digital data. This is why a special protective coating material has been added by DVD manufacturers for the purpose. Once this coating is removed or scratched for whatever reason, then the DVD’s playability will be greatly compromised. A skipping DVD is an all too common case. Add to that instances wherein the DVD player is struggling to read and load the data. If this happens often, then it is high time you clean your DVDs.

If dirt and grime are your only problems, then wiping the data side of the DVD with a lint-free microfibre cloth moistened with a little amount of alcohol should do the trick. For more stubborn scratches however, it would be prudent to buy a DVD cleaning kit from your local hardware or electronics supply store. These special cleaning agents not only remove dirt but actually fill in the scratched parts with a compound mixture similar to the coating material found on DVDs.

DVDs are currently the best optical disc storage for electronic media. The technology has come a long way and it is still evolving in terms of storage capacity and reading speed. Even if the DVD format may some day become obsolete, the media we store in them may not necessarily lose its relevance. We should take care that what we archive in our DVD discs last as long as possible.
