Turntables or mixers are essential DJ equipment. It is with this machine that the DJ can show off his talent. Without it, a DJ can’t use the amplifiers. That is why a person who dreams of becoming one should know how these machines work and fail. The most common part of a turntable that gets worn down quickly is the belt, especially if it was bought from a cheap DJ equipment store. Every time the DJ flips, reverses, or scratches his record on the platter, tension is placed on the belt. This stretches or breaks the rubber. So, to avoid messing up a good party, a DJ should know these tips on how to replace the belt even if he has the newest Crosley or Stanton turntable.

  1. Finding the right workplace. In a situation when you are just doing maintenance, you have the luxury to take the turntable to a more lighted or stable location. This is important so that each part is replaced properly. When the platter is tilted slightly to the side, the machine could work for a while, but it will soon break down and will suddenly cease to function in the middle of a party.
  2. Removing the damaged belts. To get to the belt, you need to remove the parts that are covering it. Remember, the first part that went off is the last part that is returned back. First, place the stylus on the side, then remove the slip mat or rubber platter, and then remove the platter. Make sure that you don’t bend the center spindle in the process. Once this is done, you will be looking at the rubber belt attached to the pulley machine.
  3. Inspecting the belt. If the belt is loose, you will need to buy a new one. If the belt were showing obvious signs of wear and tear, it would be better if you replace it with a new one or at least keep a spare ready. But if the belt doesn’t show any of the above, don’t remove it. Other parts of the machine could be causing the problem.
  4. Putting on the new belt. The belt is made up of your common rubber that has grooves on one side, which will be fitted on the grooves on the pulley machine. Stretch the belt and loop it around the area where the last rubber belt used to be. The grooves should be facing inside the circle.
  5. Replacing the parts. The last one that came off should be the first one to be placed back. After the belt is replaced, position the platter as evenly as possible on top of the pulley machine. Then the rubber platter follows. While replacing each part, always remember to avoid bending the center spindle.
  6. Testing. The best way to test a turntable is to play a couple of tracks and see if the problem that used to bother you is there anymore. If the problem persists, you might want to look at the other parts or send the machine to a technician.

When you are fixing the belts of turntables, always remember that it is very important to notice that it is firmly placed to avoid breakdowns due to unreliable repairs.
