With the onset of climate change and global warming, people today are becoming more and more concerned for the environment. Consumer electronics, as one of the significant players that contribute to climate change, has also started caring and going green. Gadgets are usually not environment-friendly because of the energy they use, the materials they contain, and how they end up in the landfill. Green gadgets address these concerns. And these can now be found in every category of consumer electronics.
First on our list are cell phones. Phone manufacturers are now creating phones that are eco-friendly. Motorola MOTO W233 is made from plastic bottles. The first carbon-neutral phone is 70% recyclable. Nokia 3110 Evolve is made from 50% renewable material and is 60% recyclable. Samsung E200 Eco is made from bio-plastic that is developed from corn. However, eco-friendly phones have fewer features than normal phones. Samsung also has Crest E1107 that has solar panels that can give 5 to 10 minutes talk time for each 1 hour of sunlight. Some Samsung high-definition Luxia range TV sets are mercury-free and cut power consumption by 40%. Sony has their Eco Bravia range that also reduces power consumption by 40%. Other TV manufacturers like Philips, Viewsonic, and Panasonic also came up with their own high-tech eco TVs that alters their backlight settings and screen brightness to save up on power.
A wind-up eco-friendly MP3 player was made by Veiro as a solution to batteries always running dry. One minute of winding can give you 15-20 minutes of playback and a maximum charge can give you up to 4 hrs of music playback. The eMotion Solar from Media Street is an MP3 player that has solar panels that requires 12-15 hours of exposure to sunlight to play about 9 hours of music. Trevor Baylis also has wind-up eco media player. The player can play MP3s and some video formats. One minute of winding can make you play 40 minutes of music or 20 minutes of video. Fully-charged batteries can play 20 hours of music and 10 hours of video.
Many computer peripherals and accessories are also turning green like D-Link Green products that provide energy-saving technologies and eco-friendly packaging. 4A Cause has Eco Travel Speakers that are battery-free and made from recycled materials. The speaker can be folded flat for portability and easy storage.
Using these gadgets is a fun way of helping the environment. You can shop for green gadgets and start making your house eco-friendly, as they are widely available in the market. Even the simplest consumer electronics like clocks are becoming eco-friendly. And these gadgets make cool gifts too! In helping save the environment, energy efficiency is the easiest problem to target. EnergyStar, a US government backed-up program, is certifying energy-efficient products in different categories of technology. But you must also be wary of what's really green and what's not. This is because some companies use the concept of going green as a marketing tool rather than as a way to improving and saving the environment.
