How To Understand Types of Tweeter Speakers

There are times when the sounds you get from your sound systems are not as good as you would like to have them. This is no longer a problem, because there are tweeter speakers that improve the quality of the sounds we hear.  A tweeter is a small amplifier designed to reproduce high-pitched sounds in a high-fidelity audio system.  More intricate speakers use other drivers in addition to the woofer and tweeter speakers to replicate mid-range wavelengths. In home sound systems, the tweeter and other drivers usually share a common enclosure. In some car stereo systems, however, each component may have a separate housing to provide additional flexibility in directing the sound.

There are several types of tweeters:

  1. Cone tweeters have the same basic design and form as a typical loudspeaker with optimizations to operate at higher frequencies. They are relatively cheap. They are seen in factory car speakers, shelf stereo systems, boom boxes and older stereo Hi-Fi system speakers designed and manufactured before the advent of the dome tweeter.
  2. Dome tweeters are constructed by attaching a voice coil to a dome that is attached to the magnet through a low compliance suspension. These high frequency speakers have neither frame nor basket, but a simple front plate attached to the magnet assembly.
  3. Piezo tweeter speakers contain a piezoelectric crystal coupled to a mechanical diaphragm, and are commonly found in inexpensive stereo and public address speakers. In boom boxes or car stereos, flat phonograph record-like piezo elements are used as tweeters.
  4. Ribbon tweeters use a very thin diaphragm that holds a planar coil made up of accumulated aluminum vapor, and balanced in a powerful magnetic field to reproduce high frequencies.
  5. Planar-magnetic tweeters are cheaper than the ribbon tweeters, but the ribbon tweeter speakers are lighter than the diaphragm in a planar magnetic tweeter and the magnetic structures are different. The concept is most similar to the electrostatic tweeters, but there is neither a direct current voltage field nor an electric discharge needed in the planar-magnetic tweeter.
  6. Electrostatic tweeters employ a thin diaphragm with a thin conductive coating, suspended amid two screens or punctured metal sheets, known as stators. The stators are connected to the remaining terminals of the transformer.
  7. AMT tweeters operate by pushing air out vertically from the pleated diaphragm.
  8. Horn tweeters are used for two purposes — to control dispersion, and to link the tweeter diaphragm to the air for higher efficiency. They can also improve the efficiency of the tweeter by pairing the relatively high acoustic sound pressure of the driver to the lower velocity of the air.
  9. Plasma/Ion tweeters are more complex than other tweeters, but the moving 'diaphragm' is favorably of low mass, and it is very responsive to the signal input.
