Tips for the New User

Many have become hooked into this latest craze of making home videos which accounts for the popularity of various websites such as YouTube. If you want to jump on the bandwagon, but are a bit unsure about how you’ll handle that newly-bought camcorder, then read about some handy video recording tips for the new user.

  1. Familiarize yourself. Firstly, read your camcorder’s user’s manual. This is so you get yourself acquainted with all the buttons and their functions. The user’s manual also contains valuable information on how to modify your camcorder’s settings in various lighting conditions.
  2. Have all necessary peripheral equipment ready at all times. Of course, never leave home without some spare batteries for your camcorder. Add to that one or two removable memory storage devices. Bringing a tripod is another very sensible idea to minimize all those annoying shaky footages. An external microphone is another worthy investment especially if you want to capture as much of the ambient sound as possible.
  3. Always keep both of your eyes open. Camcorders now come with these rectangular-shaped LCD screens so squinting one’s eye to peer into a narrow viewfinder to see what’s being recorded is no longer necessary. But even with this very useful innovation, some still make the common mistake of closing one eye. This should be avoided at all times during video recording. Not only is your ability to capture events restricted, but this habit also limits your reaction time.
  4. Always be respectful. Not everyone wants to take part in this whole home video making craze so never ever think of recording any material without the appropriate party’s approval.
  5. Don't abuse the zoom feature. Automatic zooms are a wonderful innovation. However, using too much of this function in a camcorder will only make your home video look disorganized and messy.
  6. Consider omitting those special effects. Newer models of camcorders now have built in special effects that one can add during the video recording process. The downside of this is that the special effects can not be easily removed, unless of course you’re a pro on video editing software applications. So unless you are keen about using specific special effects on a particular video, then it might be a good idea to keep your hands off those buttons.
  7. Always shoot spare material. Footage can be lost for various reasons so recording extra material should be done at all times to make up for these unwanted incidents.

All of these tips will be useless if you would not use your aesthetic sense and creativity in the endeavor. So never hesitate to experiment and explore the various ideas, features and materials available.
