Career Counselor Judith Gerberg discusses the importance of mentoring, and taking someone else under your wing, as well as the benefits of providing such assistance.

[Music playing] Hi, I am Judith Gerberg. And I am a New York Carrier Counselor. I am really looking forward to sharing my thoughts and my expertise someone is describe me as combining New York street smarts with create a vision. And, that is what I like to bring to you today. Will you be my mentor? That is a question I am asked very, very often. Everyone is searching for somebody who can be a role model to them, someone who is walk the path, someone who can give you and say you advice. If you also can be someone else’s is mentor. It often does not occur to people that one of the great ways of being a great mentee is to mentor someone else. Someone who is just coming in to your organization, someone who your professional organization has a relationship with, but the Financial Women’s Association Mentors high school students that interested in financial careers. And I am sure your organization could start such a program, so that you could also have the opportunity of knowing what it feels like to be on both sides of the mentoring relationship. Mentoring like any relationships takes time and effort to develop. You have to also be able to offer someone something. So, for example if you are a part of the millennium generation, who knows more about technology and has a certain kind of brain and that is brought up with point click speed, but your mentor is of another generation. There is something that you bring in a generous way and compassionate way to them as they can listen to your challenges in a compassionate way.
