Shopping for a wedding dress can be fun or it can be a nightmare. Many women have been looking at wedding dresses for most of their lives and already have a style in mind. Trends come and go with wedding dresses just as much as they do with everyday wear. There are just a couple of other things to keep in mind when you are planning to buy a wedding dress.
Simple or Fit for a Queen?
Keep your budget in mind as you are shopping for your gown. If you are trying to save money and keep things simple, it doesn't make much sense to spend thousands of dollars on a designer wedding gown, unless that is where you intend to blow your budget. It will all come down to personal choice and personal spending style. Many women do not see the need for an elaborate wedding dress, so they will buy an elegant evening gown from a department store. Others will have their dream wedding dresses custom-made. Whichever style you choose, you want it to fall within your spending guidelines. Keep in mind that the wedding dress you purchase will need alterations. These alterations should be part of your budget, as well.
Something Old or Something New?
There are many stores dedicated to wedding dresses. Smaller wedding boutiques will usually offer higher end dresses than larger chain stores. Try a variety of stores when shopping for your wedding dress. You never know what may be hiding between other dresses on the racks of those larger shops. A larger store will most likely be more affordable than a smaller boutique. Have a basic style in mind, but be open to the shopkeeper bringing you styles you would normally not even consider.
Take a family member or a bridesmaid (or all of them) with you when you try on dresses. Have someone snap pictures of you from all angles as you try on the dresses. You will most likely fall in love with one specific dress, but in case it comes down to two, having the pictures may help you select the better dress.
Buy Before You Try?
If you are on a strict budget, you can even search for your wedding dress on an online auction site or in the classifieds. Many of the dresses offered online are brand new, designer dresses that have never been worn or used. Make sure you get the dress measurements and compare them with yours. It's better to purchase a dress that's one size bigger, because it's easier to take fabric out than it is to add fabric. Buying online can be a great alternative to buying a wedding dress from a wedding shop.
