There is no one way to be a good mother, and there is no one parenting technique that will work for every child. There are different discipline levels needed for individual children and different levels of motivation will be needed for each individual child. But there are several things that every mother should keep in mind if she wants to be a good mother.
Set a good example. Whatever traits you want to see in your child, including good moral values, healthy habits and a sense of responsibility, those traits should be apparent in your actions. Children will mimic the adult behavior that they are exposed to. To cultivate certain traits and behaviors, your child will need to see them rather than just hear about them.
Be an authority figure. One common parenting idea is that being friends with your child is a way to create a fun atmosphere at home. In many cases, it can be fun, but that doesn't make it beneficial to the child. Children generally want some limits and responsibilities. When there isn't a clear authority figure, it can make things chaotic and it may make the child feel unsafe. Resist the temptation to be a buddy in favor of making your child feel safe and providing them with a clear figure of authority.
Make sure that you are treated well by the man in your life. Whether you are married to the child's father, married to the child's stepfather or you are dating, make sure your child sees a healthy, equal relationship in which neither person is devalued or abused. If a child grows up seeing a relationship that involves verbal or physical abuse, that child will likely repeat that pattern in their own adult relationships. Your child should always come first, so drop an abuser, no matter what.
Give your children the tools they will need to make it in the world. That includes manners, general social skills and the ability to assert themselves without fighting. Children need to know how to stand up for themselves as well as how to avoid unhealthy conflict.
Encourage your children to read and to pursue education as one of their long-term goals. Students who enjoy reading and are focused on their education will have a better chance of pursuing higher education. Getting a college or post-graduate degree will increase the child's choices in life as well as giving them a higher income. Keep books in the house and talk to your child about the value of education to keep this goal firmly in the child's mind.
Teach your child about people who are less fortunate. Encourage your child to help friends in need as well as to do what they can to give back to the community and to the world. Younger kids can participate in sponsoring a child in need. Older children may be interested in volunteer work.
