Discussing birth control can be uncomfortable, yet this is a conversation every heterosexual couple must have.  Here are some tips on how to be polite when using birth control.

Research your contraceptive options.  While the pill and condoms are the leading methods, there are other options available to men and women. Short-term birth control options include sponges and diaphragms.  If you are looking for a long-term contraceptive, you may want to consider an implant or an IUD.  All of these are options to be considered if children are part of your future plans.

If you and your partner have made the choice to not have children, the best birth control option would be sterilization for the male or female.  It is important to find the time to politely have this conversation.  Openly discuss your future plans for children and explore what would happen if you were to become pregnant.  It is crucial to listen to your partner with an open mind.

Once a birth control method has been decided, discuss with your partner how you will both be responsible for it.  Don't expect the man or woman to be solely responsible.  Initiate this conversation when you are comfortable opening up to your partner about it.  If your partner has had a bad day at the office, choose another time.  However, if there never seems to be a "right" time, consider the possibility that this could be intentional.  Birth control can be emotional to discuss, regardless of how logical a point may be.  When speaking to your partner about your method of birth control, show her you care by looking her in the eyes.  Remember that your partner's view may surprise you, but keep an open mind and don't judge her views.  When you have finished the conversation, be sure to thank your partner for having this talk with you. Discussing birth control can be one of the most intimate conversations a couple can have.

Once a form of birth control has been chosen, revisit the issue occasionally.
Inquire about how satisfied your partner is with the chosen method, and share your opinion as well.  If you are having any side effects with the birth control method, do not hesitate to discuss them with your partner.

When you approach the issue of using birth control politely, it may even bring you and your partner closer.  Remember to always keep the lines of communication open when it concerns your choice of contraception.
