Mutual respect and trust are the foundations of any long lasting relationship. Whether it is with your significant other, a family member, or a good friend, you would always want to maintain that special bond. Long lasting relationships are not built overnight. It takes time, effort and a host of other things to keep the relationship healthy for as long as possible. In order to build relationships that will stand the test of time, here are some tips:
Make the time. The funny thing about technology is that it is meant to make things easier and simpler for everyone. Unfortunately, sometimes, instead of bringing humanity closer people are less available to each other. Yes, it is possible to have a conversation with your loved one via webcam. But not everyone has this technology available to them. There are less and less people who pick up the phone to make a voice call. It is all emails, texts, tweets, pokes, wall posts and more. Don’t let an opportunity pass to call a great friend on Thanksgiving instead of leaving a greeting on her wall. Learn to achieve a work-life balance by really taking the time to relax (gadgets should be off) and spend quality time with your kids.
Communicate. It is not enough to spend time with the people whom you want to have in your life for a long time. Some people think that by merely being in the same room for an hour or so each week they are already fulfilling their responsibility to keep the relationship going. This is not the case…you have to really communicate with the person on a personal basis. Listen attentively to the other person. Maybe she wants to share a funny story, consult you about a problem or simply wants to talk about the news. Don’t miss the chance to really hear what she has to say. Listen with both your ears and your heart.
Provide support. When the going gets tough, that’s when you really need to step up. If you have a sick friend, offer to do things for her. When a devastating event occurs to a co-worker, ask how you can help. On the more positive side, if your little brother has a big baseball game, make sure to attend and be his number one cheerleader. People don’t forget those individuals who where there for them in both good and bad times.
Be thoughtful. Does it make you happy when someone remembers your birthday? If so, then you know that your best friend will be equally as happy when you greet her on her special day. Thoughtfulness involves doing something unexpected for the other person. It is also remembering something that is special to someone. Don’t just ask your secretary to send flowers to your mother. Make sure they are her favorite flowers. Call her and maybe arrange a date with her. By being thoughtful, you show how much you value the other person.
As human beings, forming lasting relationships is important in having a better quality of life. It gives a sense of fulfillment knowing that people can count on you and you can count on them. Trust and respect are very important in any relationship. However, much work needs to be done in order to sustain it. By putting in time and effort, communicating, giving moral support and remembering the little things, you’ll surely have relationships that will last a lifetime.
