Changing a person in bed is a labor of love. Here are some tips to make the task easier.
If you're living with a loved one who is unable to care for himself, you may be required to help him with personal tasks from time to time. It may be awkward or uncomfortable, but changing a loved one's undergarments may be necessary for not only his health, but also his pride. Be helpful to your bedridden loved one by learning how to change a person in bed.
Step 1:

Raise the bed. In order to change a person who is lying in bed, you will first need to get the bed to the right position. This requires raising the bed. Put it up to a comfortable height. This is usually just lower than your hips. Then put the head of the bed as low as you possibly can while ensuring your loved one still remains comfortable.

Step 2:

Roll your loved one over. With the bed at the right position, you can now begin to move your loved one in order to remove the soiled diaper. First, undo the straps of the undergarments and tuck them to the far side of your loved one. Then, grasp your loved one with one hand on his shoulder and one on his hip and roll him over to face away from you. If necessary, have someone else hold your loved one on his side while you continue with the next step.

Step 3:

Remove the diaper. Once your loved one is on his side and the diaper has been undone, most of the diaper should be revealed. You should easily be able to pull the diaper out from under his body. When you have done this, discard the diaper. Then you will need to clean the area where you just took the diaper from. Use pre-moistened wipes or a warm washcloth to fully clean his body in this area.

Step 4:

Put the new diaper in place. With a clean bottom, your loved one should now be ready for a new diaper. Take the clean diaper and lay it facing upward on the bed. Tuck the far side slightly under your loved one, positioning it exactly where you will want to secure it once your loved one rolls back over.

Step 5:

Lay your loved one on his back. With the new diaper in place, you can now gently roll your loved once back into a flat position. You may need the help of a partner for this step, depending on the motions your loved one is capable of making. Allow him to slowly fall onto his back, ensuring that the clean diaper remains in the same position. You don't want it to bunch up or fold as your loved one begins to lay on it.

Step 6:

Do up the diaper. The last step to changing a person in bed is to securely fasten the diaper. This should be relatively easy if you have positioned the diaper under your loved one correctly. Fold the bottom portion upward to cover his private area, and then pull the straps from either side onto the front piece of the diaper. Fasten them securely, and you'll have successfully completed your first diaper change in bed.
